Default Blackberry 8310

Hiya,

I'm new to Blackberrys and I am trying to get one to connect to the PC as it is showing as disconnected in Desktop Manager.

So, I've looked around all the forums, taken the battery out for over a minute, enabled mass media storage (it already was).

One thing I have noticed is when I plug it into a laptop that it has never been plugged into, it just isn't picked up by the O\S. It's as if something needs enabling? I'd expect at least a message to say the relevant driver isn't installed.

So ... the lead? It's a standard USB cable - does it have to be a specific cable? Is a standard USB the wrong pinout for example? Or do I need to enable some sort of USB support on the Blackberry itself?

The story is, we need to get some data off it. Maybe Bluetooth is an option but I'd have to get some Bluetooth device on the laptop.

Is it that it's just 'good old' broken.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

The 8310 comes with a data cable and that should be used. It is a standard cable. You dont need to enable anything. The other issue is the PC USB ports may not be recognizing the device. Do you use anything else that does work? In the setup of the DM the options can be selected to use the USB port but the PC must still see the device.

does it charge ok? So worst case is the BB usb port is damaged. You can try reloading the OS but unless you do a backup first, which you can't unless the DM sees the BB you will loose all the data.

Try to borrow a cable from a working BB and see if it works. If so problems solved.

The position you are in is called between a rock and a hard place.

Good luck.

Are you connecting directly into a USB port on the PC or via a HUB? BB's do not like HUBs at all. Try connecting to the PC USB in the back of the box. That might help.
