i forgot my password and now i don't know how to get passed the password option to have access to anything on my phone. What can i do to overwrite it or reset the unlock password?

Keep entering an incorrect password until the device wipes itself.

No way around it if you forgot. Once you enter it incorrectly 10 times, the device will automatically wipe everything as Penguin said.
