You will need to get a BlackBerry specific data plan in order to use BlackBerry data features such as the BlackBerry Broswer, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.

A generic data plan won't do it.

so if i read it right you can use the internet without blackberry specific data i dont care about blackberry email or blackberry messanger.

I was told but another person that i could use the internet i just could not use blackberry app world and blackberry messanger/email.

And thats fine with me all i need is the basic browser. it also said in the link that 3rd party apps would work with out the blackberry data plan so that would mean facebook would work seeing as its a 3rd party app correct

You can not get the basic BB browser unless you have a BB data plan. It is pushed with the service books. You will have to download and install Opera mini and hope it works. It is a poor substitute for the true BB browser and some get it to work and others do not. Check the Aftermarket section and use the SEARCH feature for more info.

Facebook will not work without a BB data plan as it is a RIM related service on the BB. Some 3d party apps will work, others will not. It really depends. More and more of the data intensive apps require the BB data. Most of the map programs require a a BB data plan also.

And keep in mind that you will not be able to download and install OTA without BB data either. You will be forced to install using your PC and Desktop Manager.

Google maps should work on a regular (non-BIS) data plan. For Facebook, you can use Snaptu or the mobile web version of the site (m.facebook.com).

I think the biggest problem you'll have going with a regular plan is not being able to install apps OTA. Many apps these days don't come in the alx format needed for installing using desktop manager.

When I first got my device a few years ago, I didn't have a data plan at first but with wifi was able to use the native BB browser. I think this will depend on whether or not the wifi service books are pushed to the device. Since you are buying the device from your friend, it might be on it already.

If your heart is set on it, I say try the generic data plan. If it doesn't work, you always have the option to get the BB data plan or do something else.

All of the Google applications now require a BlackBerry Data Plan to work.
