Default Keypad/ball not working

Please Login to Remove!

My phone got a little wet last night but not like submerged in water. Now none of the keys or the ball work. I removed the battery and put it back in and the phone turned on but that's it. I cannot even make or take calls (the phone rings for incoming calls but I can't take it).

Any ideas if there's a DIY fix for this? I'm actually surprised that a little wetness caused this issue. All my friends' phones were fine (and we were just doing a hike in the rain together). Tnx!

Thanks. The moisture indicators look fine in my berry.

BB's and wet don't mix. In fact, just about any cell phone and wet don't mix well.

A little water, even from steam and humidity can do damage.

Right, but none of my friends' phones had any issues after the hike and in fact mine was probably the least wet.

Regardless, let me add that the ball partially works, as in I can navigate up and down but won't click.

Still sounds like water damage, whether the indicator shows it or not. Were your friend's phones more protected than yours? Were they BBs?

You can try the cleaning trick and see if that does anything.

Turn the device off. Press and roll the ball first in the direction that it doesn't work then roll it in all directions for at least a minute. Then press the ball again and blow some "canned" air all around it and roll for another 30 seconds or so. Release and turn the device back on.

Did that do anything?

Their phones were Sony Ericsson, Android, and Samsung and we all had our phones in our pockets.

Anyway, that didn't work Dubdub. Thanks though.

Time for a new phone. As noted above, water and BlackBerry devices don't mix at all. And it only takes a very little bit of water for the damage to be caused. And you likely made it permanent by operating the device after the water entered.

So I took the phone to a repair store and guess what, they told me that this was the 5th time this week that someone walked in with the keyboard/ball issue -and the other phones were not wet. Now I'm thinking, is this a defect??! Maybe it was just a coincidence when mine stopped working just after it got wet? The warranty on my berry expired last month but if this is such a widespread issue shouldn't RIM look into it?! I don't know how issues get escalated at RIM but I assume they already know about this.

That's why, when they realised how to do it, they went with trackpads.

ended up disassembling the thing, cleaned the keyboard with alcohol and now it's working. expect that the ball clicker doesn't work and some keys have lost their sensitivity (gotta push hard to type some letters)

Try getting a new keypad and replace that may help with the sensitivity with the keys

Is the trackball "clicking"
Also pocket isn't best place to carry a BB particularly on a hike! If you do I recommend placing phone in a zip lok bag to protect against moisture
