Man, SCREW WiFi! I don't want or NEED WiFi on a BlackBerry! The point of the device for me is MOBILE internet usage, on the go, not being tied to a small physical area by WiFi! And my 8700g already HAS EDGE compatibility, so the 8300 will NOT improve the internet speed compared to my current BlackBerry one bit!

RIM, take out the WiFi, put HSDPA/UMTS into the thing in its place, on the 1700 MHZ band for T-Mobile, and get it into T-Mo corporate stores the INSTANT 3G service is available in the Washington DC/Baltimore market! THEN I'll have a reason to upgrade from the 8700g, and not one moment before!

And while you're at it, make the front half black to match the rest of it!

That's PRECISELY what they are. All the trackball-equipped models (8100/Pearl, 8800, 8300) have the charging contacts, apparently to go with charging/syncing cradles that RIM obviously plans to sell... although I don't know if they're actually offering them yet. That may still be a product that's "coming soon".

You're oversimplifying. UMA is what will be offered which promises the utmost in mobility and flexibility.

Until RIM provides a serious processor upgrade, your 'internet speed' won't mean much, regardless.

If your objective is bleeding edge internet playtime, there are lesser devices for that.

I'm stating very clearly my OPINION on what would be useful to ME! UMA is a feature I don't intend to EVER use. So, therefore, it's a useless, unnecessary feature FOR ME.

Obviously, I am speaking only for myself, and I am unanimous in this. Heh. The 8700g, which I've only had since December, has an Intel X-Scale CPU running at a clock speed in excess of 300 mhz. By comparison, my prior BlackBerry, a Nextel 7520, had a CPU with a clock speed in the double digit range... 40-50 mhz, if I remember correctly. So, I'm already experiencing a "serious processor upgrade"! No, actually, I use my BlackBerry to browse the 'net at work during the downtime, and when I'm on the go. For example, if I'm waiting for a movie to start, I'll browse the 'net to pass the time while I sit and wait. And I connect it to my computer for use as a tethered modem... at least for the time being, while I don't have a broadband connection at the house. HSDPA will increase the speed I get for use as a tethered modem, which will come in handy on those occasions when I need to download a large file.

Once I have broadband at the house, I'll probably still use the tethered modem feature if/when I get a laptop.

Point of clarification: Your previous post was only regarding WiFi, with no mention of UMA, which is why I wasted my time replying.

You're right, I failed to mention UMA in my original post. That was an omission on my part.

And I don't consider your post a waste of time. You were offering additional info on a feature you thought would be useful to me, and it may be useful to many others. It just doesn't happen to be useful to me, but you didn't know that. No harm, no foul.

Does TMobile even have any 3G service? I thought Cingular was going to roll 3G out first with their UMTS service. I don't remember hearing anything about TMobile having any high speed service beyond EDGE and UMA.
