just canceled my contract to renew it for the curve.
 

I began a contract about 3 weeks prior and received the blackberry pearl for -75 bucks.


Now I just called and canceled my account and reapply for AT&^T to get the Curve.

The lady on the phone told me that it was canceled, but it will take place at the end of the billing cycle. She said that she can do it sooner if I wanted, but I told her that I will call and cancel when I get the device so I still have a phone to use in the mean time.


My understanding is that I will not suffer a early termination fee and the rest will be prorated. And she agreed, but the thing is she sound like a ditz and didn't know what she was talking about.

Can anyone clarify if I went through this correctly? Thanks

As long as you are within 30 days, you shouldn't have a problem with an early termination fee...

However, although I'm not too familiar with at&t's technical details, I don't think it's neccessary to cancel your current contract in order to get the curve. I think you are able to exchange your pearl for the curve and just pay the difference without any problems as long as you are still within 30 days.

Precisely. The reason you are getting such a good deal ($-75) is because there are usually clauses in there that expressly prohibit you from changing ANY feature for the first 90 days or something let alone cancel. Good luck though.

Being a dealer means you are bound by the carriers return policy, HOWEVER, there may have been an additional contract *usually* a 180 days contract, with the dealer who sold you the phone. This may be where you will be hit with a termination fee, not with ATT/Cingular. For ATT/Cingular they will just reopen your account when its cancelled and give you the new customer pricing on the phone, since you were within that 30 day window.

Just remember that your phone # probably won't transfer if you do this, if you cared about keeping it.
