I just removed the 2 relevant files directly from the Java folder and it seems to have worked. Was this not the correct thing to have done? Please let me know as I hope I haven't messed something else up.

changing the vendor id worked for me.. seems like the quicker way to do it too! is there any sort of long term side effect to doing this?

I had no files in my Shared/Loader directory except one that started with 8700-xxxxxxxxxx (device I had 3 BBs ago). So I went the javaloader route and it worked almost too easily.
Thanks again to those on this board that really know what they are talking about!

Javaloader works good for that. The reason you didn't have those files is because you don't have the OS software package installed to your PC.

Why wouldn't you just change the string "true" to "false"??

Input one command at a time as the device will reboot by itself after each input. This will work as long as you have the drivers for the device correctly installed.

rboy do you have BlackBerry JDE Component Package?
I used javaloader and typed in the those seperate commands and it worked like a charm.

I was confused at first on how to actually accomplish executing the command lines.. but I finally figured out you just open windows command prompt.. Locate the folder Javaloader is in.. and execute the commands.. Worked great.. Thanks for the help..

I didn't use to consider myself dumb, but this project is starting to make me feel pretty stupid.
I can't figure out how to even install JavaLoader on my computer.
I can't find the shared/loader files to change the vendor code.\
I have JDE 4.2 on my computer, but I'm completely clueless on how it works.
Can someone explain in simple terms the easiest way to get PTT off of my phone?
Thanks for your help!

These are for changing the vendor code- not using Javaloader:
First you need to be sure you have a copy of the OS on your PC- without that you cannot change the code- the files will not be there. Go to your Carrier website and DL the latest OS version. Then:
All the info is in this thread but here it is put together:
-Go to:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8300-v4.2.2.89_P2.4.0.39
-Open the Platform alx file, then click Edit>Find and enter:
fileset pttApp="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="102"
-Change the 102 to 220 and save and close the file
-Connect your BB
-Run Desktop Manager
-Click APP Loader and go thru prompts it will remove ptt from BB
This should work for you but you need to have the OS or you will not even have the file on your PC to change

These directions are for the 8300- it may be different for the 8700 which is your listed device. This whole thread is about the 8300.

Hi guys,
I'm on Rogers in Canada and wondering if the PTT affects the Rogers blackberry curve handheld code as well?
Thanks,

Ok. I just was consolidating the information that I had used that worked for me. Apparently if you have done some things previously and then use these instructions it can set you back. I do not know why that would happen and it did not happen to me but thanks for the heads up.

I too have an 8700 and tried the javaloader technique. First off, I have Vista. You said the device would reboot after each. Nope. Nothing at all happened.

This is for the 8300 not 8700.
Go to this section for 8700 info:

Cool! I just got rid of both without modifying any files or re-installing anything. I just typed:
Code:
JavaLoader -usb erase -f KnJCDE.cod
JavaLoader -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod
You just have to remember that the module KnJCDE.cod is case sensitive. If you put it in all lower case it won't find it.

Went with the Platform.alx method as I couldn't get JavaLoader to run (it would run for a second, and immediately close).
One issue I have is that I can't back up my BB anymore. Not sure why, but it won't complete. During "Receiving Profiles," I get an error that says, "The data was not recognized by the device" and then it quits the backup.
Any thoughts?

Can you take PTT off of the 8300 by using the device only?
If you can then how do you do it...
Thanks.

I think you have to run the Javaloader from a command prompt. Like if you double click it, it WILL just blink open and then close immediately.
I made a directory in C:\javaloader, then I put the javaloader.exe in there. Then you open up a command prompt and type in your commands.
So to remove PTT, you'll run:
javaloader.exe -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod
then let the device reboot, then run the next one:
javaloader.exe -usb erase -f KnJCDE.cod
Reboot it again and PTT should be gone. That's what works for me.

Norseman, thanks for the info...definitely made a difference. One thing, though...when I put in the command, and then put in my device password and hit enter, the device screen flashes, and then goes back to where it was...no reboot.
Any thoughts?

Thanks to everyone. I also removed that 1MB beast that's always sitting there doing nothing from my Curve. I think it feels faster now.
I used the JavaLoader method. I think John Clark posted the link to download it which was very helpful. I have the OS on my machine, but JavaLoader apparently isn't a part of that.

Bdizzle, I'm not sure on that one. Are you using the "-f" switch?
Maybe try forcing it to reboot after running. If that doesn't work, try Stinsonddog's method.
Good luck!

Guys - since I re-installed with the O2 OS last night, I used this other technique which is quite nice also. Edit the "True" in the following line inside "platform.alx" to say "False".
Quote:
-Open the Platform alx file, then click Edit>Find and enter:
fileset pttApp="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="102"
|
This works best if you might be making changes any in the future, because later OS loads might re-install it. It's unfortunately that some BES users will have to keep fighting to keep it off to avoid having to re-activate. Find some time your not going to need e-mail for a few days and do it that way if you can.

Didn't try the -f switch. Good thinking. I did it by changing the alx file, but really want to remove the feature rather than just mask it, ya know? I want to free up the space.
By "force a reboot" do you mean just power cycle the device or pull the battery, or is there a command I should be entering?

Yes that is what I meant. But definitely try putting the -f in the syntax. That forces the OS to remove the .cod even if it's in use. (I'm pretty sure you have to use that switch in order to remove it with Javaloader.)

I did the -f switch, and instead of just flashing a blank screen, it flashed the 'connected to desktop' icon on a white screen for a second. No reboot, so I powered off and on.
Anyway to check to see if it's still installed?
