all i see this thread is dedicated to the 8300...i went to the 8700 and dont see any i dont see any solutions for it. does the solutions provided here will works for the 8700 also?

Just curious, can you assign a different application to the left convenience button once PTT is removed just like you can choose different apps on T-Mo's devices?

Yes. go to Options >>Screen/Keyboard and scroll down to Left Convenience button and set it to whatever you want.

Thanks John. Just like T-Mo then. So basically, the concern was about freeing up memory and not that AT&T'rs couldn't use the left button for anything else.

I'm asking because my cousin is waiting for the 8310 and I'm trying to gather info for her so it will be as smooth a transition as possible (she's coming from Palm OS).

I guess I have to wait until the 8310 software is on the website so I can do this.

I am in the process of updating my OS from 4.2.2.170 to 4.2.2.174.

I see some just deleted files from the java and some used a java loader to do it.

If I open the java file on my PC and delete the PTT.cod and the KnJCDE.cod before I upload the new 4.2.2.174 OS will it remove the PTT feature off the phone.

BTW: Blackberry 8310 through Cingular/AT&T currently running 4.2.2.170

Just edit the .alx file, it's the easiest way to do it. Just change pttApp="true" to pttApp="false". Save and then run App Loader and it will remove PTT. Works the same on all future OS versions as well.

The only thing I would ad is when you click APP Loader in the Desktop Manager don't check anything. Just hit next. When you edit the alx file it knows which files need to be removed.

I've never was one for modifying cellphones, but damn its fun to make it do what you want for a change.

I have no clue what I just did, but javaloader wiped that S.O.B. out.

You guys are great. Thanks so much for the help. I used MS wordpad to edit the platform.alx file (to change the vendor ID), the connected to DM App Loader and it removed the ptt file and one other file (K....). I'm so happy to be rid of PTT.

All this is well and good but what if one is not using the Desktop Manager in favor of a BES? Really don't care to install DM just for this task. Or is this one of those situations where I have to choose between two evils.

Well, if you want to get rid of PTT via this method, the DM is required.
