Default Map Data on LOCAL flash card?

Please Login to Remove!

I know the carriers wouldn't like this, but I wonder if map data can be loaded LOCALLY on a device, rather than having to pull if over the air? Any GPS device you can buy already has map data preloaded on it, and it's free! I'm quite certain that a fairly large amount of data could be loaded onto a 2Gb flash card, could BlackBerry Maps or Google Maps read the data from here?

Carriers probably do quite well with all the over the air data pulled down, so I don't think they would be too thrilled if it could be read locally.

Any thoughts?

It can not be done right now. When it is possible I am sure the news will swiftly be posted in the GPS forum of this site.

The carriers don't care (though I guess those pushing Telenav are getting a slice). It's up to a GPS app developer to figure out how to do this.
