Oh No! Dust…….. Part 2 -
06-14-2007, 02:10 PM
In November of 2005 I posted a thread on the 8700 board called "Oh No! Dust…….." when I first noticed dust under the screen of my 8700. That thread eventually received nearly 500 replies and over 28,000 views. I credit the heavy traffic on the thread to the number of people having dust problems with there 8700.
Well folks, here we go again.
I've had my Curve for 1 week and already have a lot of dust under screen. Most of it is on the right side where the side panel is a bit weak and has play in it. The amount of dust I have in my Curve after 1 week is about equal to the amount I had in the 8700 after months of use. Meaning the problem is much worse with the Curve than it was with the 8700.
I can't believe after over a year and half of RIM knowing about the 8700 dust problem that they released the Curve with the problem worsening.
Will this thread break the 500 reply mark?

I remember the dust thing with the 8700 and ti was my 3rd unit before I got one that was dust resistant. Due to this I have looked very closely at all of my Blackberry units after the 8700.
I have not seen a speck of dust under wither my 8800 or 8300. I have had my 8300 from the day it was introduced and no dust here.
There are people here that have been thru several 8300 looking for the "perfect" 8300 and I would think they would have spotted even the smallest particle. You can bet they will be looking closely after reading this!

Yup the Dust is out there! On my Thread 3 Curves in 5 days I mentioned going to check out a new shipment at an at&t store, and 2 of the ones I checked out had dust on the bottom left hand corner. I just don't know what's goin on there at RIM, but somebody needs to step it up.

I was just about to post about this. Stuff like this pisses me off to high hell. I'm new to bb but so far I am not sold that this is the perfect phone. Lot's of good, lot's of bad. Why wouldn't they seal them better?

I took an 8700 100% out of its shell to work on the casing plastic, and put it back together. (Its posted on this site.) Im talking even removing the clear-plastic that is the led-indicator from the casing.
Anyways, A LOT of what held that phone together was "super strength double sided tape". No joke. You know, the screens are just pressed on there.
Its hard to not have dust get in the nicks and crannies there. I've noticed it with almost every device I've had, including stuff like GameBoys, etc.
Good news is, sometimes that dust just goes away. (Or, off the screen.)
PS - If you want to see if you have dust, take your BB out into sunlight and have the backlight off, then look close (OCD freaks... GO!)

MATTY!!! Stop! I'm OCD.lol
Nah, the dust thing is so uncontrollable! Even someone as nuts as me with my devices can't help that over time. I must say it is annoying though to see specs get in there.

Nothing thusfar. Mine has seen some heavy use outdoors, too. And, a buddy dusted me pretty good on a dirt road two days ago - my windows were down. I know my uniform and boots were killed.
Will keep an eye on it. Mine was built in Mexico.

Didn't see this thread and started my own...but I would chime in as having the same dust issues my 8700c (early production model) had.

As much as I hate to admit that Sean76 is right! <vbg> <humble>
I am no longer using my 8300, gone back to the superior 8800, but as I was shutting it down and puttin g it in the drawer with the rest of the BBs, I notice that dust has penetrated the 8300 at edge of the screen between the side volume keys and the right conv. button. If you press on the edge on the device at this spot you can see the lighter silver plastic is not tight against the darker grey plastic under the screen cover.
You would think after the 8700 that the 8300 would be dust tight.
All this supports my opinion that the 75xx series build quality is far superior to what RIM is giving us today. They may not look as spiffy and glitzy but my 75xx series was indestructable.
Give me the guts and screen of the 8800 in a 75xx case you got a winner!

I just noticed mine has some also. Not sure how much it will bug me but I will probally exchange it. Only had it a week so I will wait for a couple more before I do so hopefully they take care of the build problems that some people have had.

The new cases must be cheaper to have manufactored. They old black plastic on the 7520 was the same color thru and thru so if it scratched it was the same color!
Maybe "quality" plastic cost more!

Mine had no dust until I used compressed air can to clean the case. Looks like the compressed air blew some dust in where the volume keys are.

Granted dust shouldn't be getting in our cases, but you can't tell when you are using the thing unless you are using the black screen of the berry outside in the sun to look at yourself. What's really the big deal?

When you spend that kind of money you want the item to be sealed and perfect.
That would be like buying a new car and there is a leak around a seal! Car still runs, it's just a little leak!
Mine 1.5 weeks so far no dust!

Dust is a fact of life with cell phones. While I too world like a dust free phone there are only a few with sealed displays. I have several BB's & find in general that they are fairly dust resistant. While I am very careful with mine I still put them in my pocket which is a bad practice [pocket lint] & yet after 9 months my 7130c has no dust under the display.
Then there is another way to look at it, while we are concerned about dust, the windows mobile users devices are freezing & crashing! So it could be a lot worse.
Finally it's important to remember there is no perfect phone. So from my perspective I'm very happy with my BlackBerry's.

Quite the contrary. The lower right corner of my screen looks like it made out with a pixie. It looks like it's covered in glitter.

Well my Curve seems to have gotten dust inside of it! Started yesterday with a tiny bit by the top right hand corner, and now there's a whole lot more on the top! Luv the form factor to death, but I'm walking away from the Curve for at least a month or two. I'll buy one when I hear some of the issues were corrected, namely the build quality, loose rubber, loose mic piece, and now the dust issue! Really stinks because the device is such a pleasure to hold. Hopefully it won't take RIM long to get on point, and get this stuff corrected. As Greg said, back to the 8800.
For now!!!

Forget it!!!
Unless you take it apart, that dust is camping out under your screen. The way the 8300's are made, everyone will have dust under their screen sooner or later! But if it makes you happy go and exchange it for another one at the store. Hopefully you don't get one with more issues then the one you have with dust under the screen.

I noticed a bunch of dust under my screen a week or so ago. It kinda seems like it all got in there at once, and hasn't changed/shifted at all. It probably doesn't help though that since it didn't come with a holster, it's shuffling around in my lint-susceptible pockets all day.

I just got my replacement in the mail. It seems a lot more solid and actually a little heavier. It is a little heavier and the battery isn't even in it.

(sorry, i reposted in this thread...)
hey guys... so, i've read on the forums about people having 'dust under the screen' problems with their curves. my question for those who have the dust is exactly how much dust gotten in your phone?
i've had my curve since july 4 and just started getting the dust last week, so i can return it for a new one by this friday. i'm just wondering if it's worth the hassle? i've gotten dust in my phones before (mainly because i keep the phone in my pocket), but the dust on the right side of my curve seems to be a little much for just over 3 weeks. i'm just wondering if the exact same thing will happen again with a new curve, or maybe some dust but not as much?
thanks in advance!

I have had mine for 3 weeks now and I just noticed some dust at the same place where everyone has been saying (right near the volume keys on the right side of the screen). I bought mine from amazon, do you think I can get it replaced at a local AT&T store?
Also, you people are getting dust even if you have the screen protectors and cases, etc? I was still deciding on what case to get and was just about to order one and I noticed the dust issue.

it's always worth a shot. you'll just have to call and ask...
i have a screen protector but that doesn't keep it from getting the dust coming in from the sides or back. a co-worker of mine has had her curve for a week and half and is getting dust... and she doesn't even keep it in her pocket! oh well... it's still an AWESOME phone!

Reading this thread has got me so nervous. I've had my Curve for a grand total of 5 days (and have seen nothing so far). Could I possibly have a "newer" phone that is more protective? *wishful thinking* I don't want to have to trade in my phone bc I love it to death. Gah
