I tried to do a backup using the Desktop Manager and got a "Communication Error - The data was not recognized by the device" when it got to the "Receiving Phone Options" part.

I used the Switch Device Wizard to transfer all my settings from my Pearl to my Curve. It went through without any problems but now I want to backup before I install any new apps or themes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Happened to me also the first I tried to sync after I had switched up from the 8700 to the 8800.
1-disconnect the BlackBerry from the PC.
2-Close DM and reopen.
3-pull the Battery and reboot the BlackBerry
4-Reconnect and retry.

Tried that and still no luck.

Any other suggestions?

I'm having the same problem here on my TMO Pearl. I have the latest Pearl OS from AT&T and the latest Desktop Manager. I hope someone knows how to fix it, I've tried everything I can think of. I've using Vista here and never had the problem until I upgraded the Desktop Manager.

Can't you just do an "advanced" backup and select all the options to backup except phone options?

I went in to advance options under backup and backed everything up one by one until I found the error. I just cleared the item that was giving me an error and then did a full backup. That cleared up the problem. Able to do a full backup since without any issues.

This problem has come up like 4 times for me its so dam annoying
