Question what is unlocked?

Please Login to Remove!

i hear all these things about UNLOCKED curve phones. what does it really mean? does it just mean you can use it on verizon, tmobile, or cingular/att?

also -- does the 8300 cingular curve have wifi?

i'm thinking about waiting for the tmobile one to come out since i hear it has wifi and u can use it at home if you have a wireless router for free unliminted calls... that's HUGE!!!!!!!

please let me know.

Yes, that is what unlocked means--having the BlackBerry in a state where it is usuable on other compatible networks. The 8300 Cingular curve does not have WiFi. The TMo 8320 is said to have WiFi.

Not exactly.
As Jsanders indicated, an unlocked phone will only operate on other networks with compatible wireless technology.

For example, Nextel phones use SIM cards, but you couldn't unlock a T-Mobile phone and use it on the Nextel network.

Options > Advanced Options > SIM Card > type m e p d

If Network = Active... the phone is locked.
If Network = Disabled/Inactive... the phone is unlocked.

Why pay for it? Call at&t and tell them you are traveling over seas and need it unlocked and they will get it for you.

It doesn't matter unless you want to take your phone to another carrier.

Most carriers won't provide an unlock code for you unless you've been a customer in good standing for a certain perioud of time. Usually 90 days or so.
Since this user was somewhat new... I assumed they didn't qualify for an unlock code directly from the carrier yet.

An unlocked phone allows you to use a SIM card from any compatible GSM carrier.
Since the Curve is AT&T branded... it will take AT&T/Cingular SIM cards by default. It wouldn't need to be unlocked in order to use an AT&T or Cingular SIM card in the device.

If your carrier was T-Mobile... or some other GSM carrier... then you'd need the phone unlocked in order to use that T-Mo or other carrier's SIM card in it.

If you buy the Curve off eBay, just make sure you add a BlackBerry Data Plan to your wireless account. The phone will basically be crippled without a BlackBerry Data Plan.
Putting your SIM card into the phone will allow you to use the phone and SMS messaging... but you on't get web browsing*, email, or data features without a BlackBerry Data Plan.

User LunkHead is working on a FAQ for buying BlackBerry devices from eBay. You should look for it and read it before you make your purchase.

EDIT: Found the thread which discusses it:
FAQ -- How to buy a BB on eBay
