I am new to blackberry, actually, I am looking at buying one. I have had several Palm Treo's threw sprint. I have had the motorola Q, and right now I ahve the Samsung blackjack. I am not nuts for the 5.0 Windows platform, but I like it better than the old Palm O/S. Now, I am not a power user, but I do use the PDA and the browser. also, I could care less about music.

Now, to my questions, someone tell me about there 8300.. How many contacts can it hold? I habe about 533 in my Blackjack. How does the SMS messaging work? Does it scroll? Do these phones have speed dial? Can anyone compare the O/S to either palm or to windows? Also, I know the 8300 is not 3G, is that going to be a big difference?

I really like the size of this phone, and the feel. How is the battery life really?

Thanks everyone for any imput you might have for me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8300/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I am not sure I can answer your q's (I'm fairly new to the Curve myself and have had no other smartphones other than BB)

But I think you might want to check out the 8800.

8300 has a camera
8800 has GPS

The 8300 is smaller than the 8800. Beyond that they are the same device. The 8300 is currently on a newer version of the OS so it will do more. As far as basic BB functions like address book, etc. they are the same. I've heard of people having thousands of contacts in their address book.

SMS works like any other phone except you have a full keyboard to type on.

Yes, the BB has speed dial.

It's not 3G (it's not a big deal, however, it would be nice if it had it.)

OS is much more stable than Palm or Windows.

Can't attest to battery life since I don't curently own one.

The main feature of BB is the push email. No other platform does email as well as BB.

I switched from palm os to bb curve recently. The bb is not as pretty and not as user friendly as palm. Having said that, once you learn your way around a bb it is much faster to use, and in that sense, easier...you just have a bit of a learning curve...no pun intended. I also loved giving up the stylus - the bb os works great with the trackball and keyboard.

Most of the features you seem concerned about are not really an issue. Battery life is excellent for a phone, but not as good as my old palm handhelds which could go for weeks without a charge.

I use missing sync on a mac, and find that the syncing is more reliable than palm ever was. Also the bb os is very stable and responsive. The PIM apps are not as pretty as palms, but they work great once you get used to them. The bb is not really designed to be a PDA, but it has sufficient PDA functions for my needs an it does all forms of communication so wonderfully!

I'm happy with my curve.
