Default Outlook 2003 Synchronization Crashes

Please Login to Remove!

I synchronize my 8330 via USB to Outlook 2003. This works, sometimes.

Based on other threads in this forum, I can see that BB does not synchronize very well under certain circumstances of records set up in Outlook.

I do not add/edit data on my BB. I do all that in Outlook.

Hence, I think it should be possible for me to do a one way synchronization from Outlook to BB, and, when there is a conflict, Outlook should always win.

I've set it this way under the synchronize configuration options, advanced. Outlook is set up to win each time.

Still, Desktop Manager crashes frequently in the middle of synchronization somewhere. I end up with duplicates in either Outlook, on the BB, or both.

I must be doing something wrong with the one way synch, but I can't figure it out. Any thoughts?

Since I never edit the data on the BB, another method may be to simply delete all of the Outlook data on the BB, then do a fresh synch of the data I have in Outlook to BB. Since the BB woud be blank, presumably that should avoid crashes... but how do I quickly and easily get rid of the Outlook data on the BB?

Thanks for any comment.

Sounds like you may have a blank record or blank entry somewhere in Outlook. Have you looked at the log to see if you can find out where it crashes?

This has happened to me when there's a corrupt Calendar item in Outlook. Watch closely to see if it happens at the same point in the process each time. You'll have to figure out which calendar item is causing the problem, then delete it and re-enter.

Thank you for your responses... and yes, my guess is that there are some blank fields etc in some records that cause the problem... and there is probably a way to spend a lot of time for it, search for it, to resolve. Thank you for your thoughts.

However, I would think there should be a SIMPLER way to do this, by somehow properly setting up the option that Outlook always wins... if I properly select that option, then, presumably, there never should be a conflict that cannot be resolved, since it would always be resolved in Outlook's favor. As outlined in the original message, I have set the advanced options accordingly, and I still get conflicts, which makes no sense to me. I was hoping there is some other step I may be missing that you can point me to that forces a one way synchronization, rather than a two way. As is, no matter what options I select, there appears to be some element of a two way synchronization, not a one way overwrite.

On another note, while playing with this some more, it appears that my Task synchronization causes most crashes. I have about 200 tasks. Most of these do NOT have a start date; most, but not all, have a due date. Somehow it seems that the BB requires and somehow generates start dates for tasks. These are often odd dates, and often they are dates far into the FUTURE, such as 12/10/2050 or something like that. Very strange. I am not certain whether BB or Outlook insert these dates, but somehow they are generated during the synchronization process.

Thanks for any other thoughts on this subject.

One more oddity I noticed when trying to solve my problem this morning... there appear to be problems with tasks; for example, let's say I synchronize Outlook to the BB. The Desktop Manager will report that "28 changes made to handheld will be applied to Outlook". Which I check into details, I see this usually deals with dates (see prior posting) and sometimes alarm flags. Of course I am not interested in changing anything in Outlook because that's the database I maintain.

Now, when I hit "resynchronize", I get the reverse response: "28 items will be changed on Handheld". If I look at details, I see the values I want (Outlook) and strange ones on Handheld (the odd dates above) so I accept the changes. The synchronization takes place... and, now, one would assume, Outlook and the Handheld should have the same data.

However, when I do an immediate resynch, prior to doing anyting with either Outlook or the Handheld, I get the exact same sequence of events... the synchronization window will once again show "28 task items in Handheld have changed and will be updated in Outlook". Again, same strange dates as listed above. When I cancel and hit resynch, I again get the reverse and so on.

It almost seems that for some reason the BB forces a date change as the data is updated in the BB, without any user input. Outlook dumps valid dates (or so it seems) to the BB, BB changes it, and, upon next synch, wants to change Outlook to the incorrect dates BB somehow generated.

Very strange. Does not seem Outlook 2003 and BB Tasks synchronize all that well... if anyone has experienced the same, and found a way to resolve, your comments are appreciated. Thank you.

It's either the contacts or the calendar. I will post the recovery process for the calendar below. You should have the settings in DM to Desktop Wins. It will prompt you for accepting all modifications and additions.

When DM crashes during calendar synch:

OK, I have this issue on occasion myself. My resolution is the following:

(Make sure you Outlook calendar is current you will look anything not on there)
Connect to handheld to your PC (if you have auto synch turned on click cancel before it hits the calendar synch portion.
Now using DM Click Backup/Restore>Advanced>
Then select the Calendar on the right hand side (Hand held side) and press clear. (this deletes the calendar off the phone)
Now perform normal synch and it should load your entire calendar to the handheld.

Let me know if it works and good luck!

Thank you very much, Thatsmister2u! I tried that, or at least a variant of that, and it resolved my issue.

Specifically, my issue was not with calendars, but with tasks. Following your suggested procedure above, I deleted all Tasks off the phone, then resynched, and, sure enough, that took care of all issues... at least so far!

Thank you for having taken the time to respond.

fyi... don't know if this helps, but I often get the duplicate records error when syncing and I finally tied it down to happening when I change the day or time or maybe both on an EXISTING calendar event ON my BB, then sync. I haven't tried this under the new OS though so maybe it's been fixed. I basically stopped changing calendar events on my BB, and only do it on Outlook 2003.

Also, adding new calendar events from my BB and syncing has never caused the dups problem for me.
