It only has a 2.0 megabyte camera and has no 3G. How is this any better than the 8900? Can someone please explain to me?

It's not meant to be better than an 8900, that was an expansion of the curve line to give it a premium product for those who wanted a fully featured device in the slightly smaller form factor, whereas the 8520 is the true update to the original curve models with their slightly lesser spec and cost.
