Again sorry if this is also in the wrong section (new to the forum )

I've just got my 8520 curve today sim-free and am currently using an older 3G o2 card which obviously has no Blackberry data plan. Because of this I've turned data services off, and for my connections just have wifi selected as I dont want to be using up the 1mb usage i have lol.

The problem I've got is that it is not letting me surf the net without data services enabled. Can i not just browse the internet using my wifi connection?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Turning data services off will indeed disable all data services on the device, including wifi.
Instead of doing that, you can just turn off the Mobile Network in Manage Connections and you can then still browse via wifi and hotspot browser.

Oh ok thanks, but will this be using up my mobile internet allowance?

The reason I ask is because I'm not on a blackberry data plan yet and so will have a huge bill come the end of the month if I start using mobile internet.

EDIT: I have just tried doing this and it still didn't work. I think the main problem is that I don't have a tick next to wifi in manage connections. Should I have? And if so is there anything particular I need to be doing in order to properly connect to my wireless router (even though it says im connected, just wondering if for some reason im not able to connect to the internet from it)

A tick would mean you have connected to BIS through wi-fi. As you don't have BIS, it won't show a tick.
Instead it should show a dash. This should mean you can still browse the internet.

Have you made sure your browser is set to HOTSPOT in options - advanced - browser - the top option?

Also note, that some carriers are requiring you to have a BB data plan, in order to get the correct service books for browsing over wi-fi. I don't know if O2 are one of them.

Am on holiday atm hence not checking this very often.
When I get back I´m going to get myself a sim only contract with o2 with an unlimited data plan and then see if I can get it sorted out. It is a sim free phone though and I did think that if I took out the sim card I would be able to access just the wifi but even that didn´t work. Like I said though I´m going to have a proper play with it when I get back home.

I have set the browser default to hotspot etc and done everything which should have let me just surf the internet through wifi but it still wouldn´t work. Its just a bit annoying because I could do with having the wifi set up on my phone to use when on holiday.

Please make sure you get a Blackberry Simplicity plan, one with "unlimited internet" won't work on a blackberry.

Yeh don't worry thats what I'm going to be ordering.

Unlimited texts and internet plus 300 minutes for £10 with o2, so I'm very happy with that.

Since getting back from holiday yesterday night I've managed to get the browser working with just wifi turned on. I didn't do anything different than before, its just decided to start working.
