Hi,

So I'm new to the blackberry community, and I just got this Curve 8520 last week. It seems to be working fine, a couple of hiccups here and there, but nothing serious. I have one issue that's been bugging me.

I notice that there is software version 5.0 and newer ones out, but mine is v4.6.1.286 (Platform 4.2.0.122). When I go to "wireless update", there don't seem to appear any updates that come up. Is it a matter of if my ISP authorises the software updates for my blackberry?

If you re new to BB, then I would not suggest an OS upgrade just yet. Make sure that you know what the BB does and how it works. If it does what you want and need, then it probably isn't broken and doesn't require an OS update. The boards are full of those who experience issues with an upgrade and it does things they don't want to do. Then again, we only see the bad, rarely the good.

Play with the device. Get to know it before you try to fix it.

I agree in part. I would get to know the device before doing an upgrade, especially if you are the least bit intimidated. It's easy to do, but as Dub says, plenty of people still mess it up. However, upgrades can provide new functionality. You may think you are happy with what you have, but you can't know what you are missing if you don't try it.

As far as other questions, the carriers release the updates, but it is possible to install OS version for your model released by other carriers. See the latest OS version sticky posts at the top of the forum for your series blackberry. But get some experience before you do it.

Thanks for the tips guys, I guess I'll just take your advice and just stick with what I have. I got to know all parts of the software already, but I don't think I really need an update. Thanks for the advise though.
