And I suspect if you do a full power off, the blackberry will not stay warm. BUT if it does, then I would believe a hardware problem AND/OR a battery problem.
What is your battery life like? Does the battery lose charge significantly while it is out of the device?
As far as the blackberry heating up while in use, you may notice the device getting warmer than usual if it is doing something that is continually is continually hitting the network, such as the browser being open to an active web page, app(s) being open and running and hitting the network constantly, dowloading a big file....
If you've ruled out everything else, then try another battery. If you see the same problems (and you've ruled everything else out), then suspect that the device is the problem.
