New Blackberry Curve 8520 user - need advice

Hi guys. I just returned to Canada for 5 months (I was traveling and shall be leaving again in the Spring)

I've always has a pay-as-you-go account from Rogers that is still active.

My brother got a new BB and lent me his Curve 8520 to use while I'm here (nice phone btw). He had his locked to Fido (a Rogers subsidiary)

I plugged in my pay-as-you-go SIM and low/behold IT WORKED! I can send/receive calls and SMS's.

Does this mean that my phone is actually 'unlocked'? (Thats questions no. 1)

Since my Rogers SIM isn't on any data plan I don't have access to Internet. But this handheld does have Wifi connectivity. So I turned it on a checked the browser. I was connected to the default 'home' page that was Yahoo! Canada. From there I could search and browse the web. But I can't seem to enter any URL's in the Go To option without the "You don't have a Rogers data plan" page blocking me.

Also the free Facebook and Twitter apps tell me that I'm "currently on a service plan that does not support this application."

Can I not use the Internet apps using Wifi only? Does one need a data plan to access the browser? Should I unlock the phone?

**I'd also like to know why RIM only give you telephone technical support if you pay them :(**

Thanks guys.

No it is not unlocked Rogers / FIDO works on the same networks and shares the same towers, where Fido is a sub of Rogers it will work.

for your pay-as-you-go you need to get the BlackBerry pay-as-you-go data plan from rogers that allows your social networks. the data will need to be there even to allow the wifi now, silly I know

as for the RIM technical support they require you to go to the authorized dealer of the device first, as an employee of Rogers, i know that if there is an issue that needs to be dealt with, we would escalate to them. and then it would be no charge.

hope this helps

So for me to use the social network apps and the browser on Wifi I have to get the data plan (even though it wont be the data plan that is accessing the browser/apps - it will be wifi)?

Yep. You need the BB data plan and access via RIM's servers for those services. Some carriers require it or have a scaled down BB data plan for certain things, like social networking. They vary from carrier to carrier so you should check with them for specific answers.

yes it is silly like I stated but it allows the BB APN on your device that will allow you to access the social feeds and such you could call and see if they can add the BB APN on the account where it is a 0$ soc but I dunno if they would, I am only in blackberry support not Customer Care for Rogers

I called Rogers and they were able to turn on the BB APN for me. Social networks/Browsers work now.

Thanks for the help.

*Stops shaking fist at RIM ... for now*
