web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 hello all ! this is my first post on this forum. so i am looking to get a basic BB model with a good battery life - ideally more than 2 days - and which will also have basic internet capabilities. i quite like the slightly older but nice looking curve 8520 model. my question relates to the web browser capabilities. i need to regularly check up bus timings and locations for my university's shuttle service. so i will need to open a page that shows the location of the buses in real time in the form of moving onscreen blobs. this is the page i will need to open this URL - emory.transloc.com (you just need to google this). can someone please clarify if this phone will be able to not only open the page but also zoom in enough to let me get an approximate idea of the bus locations? thanks! |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 That site uses Flash. You will not be able to view "moving onscreen blobs" on the 8520. You would have to use the mobile site which does not appear to offer those visuals. http://emory.transloc.com/m/ |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 Most smartphones will give you about one day or less of battery life, depending upon use. We really cannot say what you will get however. |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 hey thanks guys. this is a little disappointing as i had sort of settled on the 8520. and i just checked out the "Mobile Access" which tells me that there are specific apps for BB, Apple, and Android phones. So, basically I am wondering if these apps will work with the 8520 and if they will let me see the position of the buses in real time? and alternately, can i go in for another BB that is not costly, has a smallish form factor like the curve, and also has flash support? thanks! |

Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 If Flash is a major consideration, you may want to look at Androids. Neither BlackBerrys nor iPhones support Flash web sites. |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 oh this is strange because i do remember a friend who has an iphone opening up the said page and checking up on the position of the buses. so, perhaps the page will probably run on BB since it does on the iphone, which doesnt have flash too. btw, can someone do me a favour and just check up on their own BB phones if this page opens or not. thanks! |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 That person probably was using the iPhone app for that site. And as noted above, when you go to the site on the BlackBerry, it shows the MOBILE site by default. |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 oh, sorry i missed that. also i checked with the developers and they confirmed that the BB apps are text based and have no visuals on them. also, you are right, that guy was using the apple apps to see the site. in fact, i am ready to compromise a bit and simply go to the transloc site which falls somewhere in between a fully visual and a text based page. while it does show the road the bus is following, you have to refresh the page to update the info. for now, i am liking the curve too much to even think of going for the iphone or any other phone. thanks a lot! |
Re: web browser capabilities of the curve 8520 Hey there is an app on app world that u can download instead of going on the site to see the visual location of the bus. I'm not sure if it supports that with the app, but using a app is much more simpler than going on the web. Posted via BlackBerryForums.com Mobile |
