First, welcome to the Forums.
You will need a bluetooth gps puck, as the 8700g does not have built-in gps.

The link that was provided lists some manufacturers of Bluetooth GPS devices. You can research and pick the one that best suits you.

No, it can use GPS via Bluetooth. It just doesn't have a GPS receiver built in to the device, like the 8820 or 8800. You would need to buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver and pair it (via Bluetooth) to the 8700g. Kind of like how you pair a Bluetooth headset with the unit.

Save your neck is to sell your 8700g and buy either 8320, 8310 or 8820 (I think).

The 8700g doesn't have a "real" GPS built-in. It's got an "assisted" GPS, which means that it depends upon servers operated by your carrier to provide GPS services. That means that you have to pay your carrier to use it. As an example, Verizon Wireless cheerfully offers the option to their customers to use that service to locate the closest VZW store in your area. Choose that option at their web site and it first prompts you to subscribe to and pay for the service. I could live without that.

To the original poster, it may help to distinguish between the gps receiver and the application that utilizes the reciver to map your location, etc.
To start, see Stinsonddog's tips:
http://home.comcast.net/~tamsterra/OP/Blackberry_GPS.htm
Understand that the 8700g does not have the receiver that the mapping applications would use. For that you need a bluetooth puck, as discussed in numerous threads here on BBF.

No. The 8700g does not have an onboard gps receiver, assisted or otherwise.

Yes it most certainly does, just like almost every cellphone manufacturered and sold today. Here are RIM's own words to describe it:
Research In Motion
Note, however, that some Palm Treo's and some OEM models that I can't recall right now have a complete onboard GPS (not the assisted type) that serves the same purpose.

You need to call your cellular carrier to find out. Last time I looked, Verizon and Sprint were charging about $9.99/month for the service, and you might need to purchase a program to load into your 8703e (more than one available).
At $9.99/month, after a while, you could eventually buy a few external GPS receivers, throw them in the garbage, and then buy a few more. The real issue is paying for the privilege of not having to carry around a pocket full of devices to get the service to work.

The OP is asking about the 8700g. The 8700g does not have an integrated, onboard GPS receiver. To take advantage of the GPS features of mapping and navigation applications, the OP will need a bluetooth puck.
To the OP, what application you need in China.... you will have to look at the specifications and literature for applications available to you and find out. See Stinsonddogs gps tips http://home.comcast.net/~tamsterra/O...kberry_GPS.htm to get started.

Here is the link to Google Maps, zhenzhenzizi, assuming you can download it. This a popular free mapping program that will work on 8700g with a bluetooth puck.
Google Maps
This will take you to the page to download and install over the air.
I just searched on Hong Kong, and it shows up. I scrolled around and the maps are downloading. I suggest you play around with it, if you are able to download and install. Without a gps receiver you will not be able to automatically locate yourself, etc. What you will have will be as using one of the free mapping products on the internet, like Yahoo or Google, or MapQuest, etc. But you can get some of the feel of the application on the 8700g, if you are able to download it.

8703e is not the same as the 8700g. two completely different models that work on different networks. the 8703 wouldnt even work in china since it uses CDMA and they use GSM. (well ok, i think some of the airports use CDMA and GSM but for the most part its all gsm)

Gps -

I have an 8703e wit Verizon and I have been through this exercise.
1. The point about CDMA and GSM is totally valid.
2. Currently, Verizon does not allow GPS usage on the 8703e (much to my frustration) They do allow Pearl, 8100, and 8800 series to use GPS.
3, All RIM phones have GPS in them for the enhanced 911 feature. But it is up to the carrier as to whether or not the user can access this. I have had some wars with Handango over this as they will post programs and claim compatibility for the 8703e and then you discover that they are wrong. Then a long dialog ensues to get your money back. Handango is scrupulously honest and has always refunded money on purchases that do not work.
4. I would question the advisability of suggesting Verizon or Sprint to a user in China. I do not think that either of these carriers are in China but I could be wrong about this.
5. Finally, the advice to check with your carrier is the only correct answer that you should listen to. You may have to pay a surcharge for GPS usage
6. Well not really finally. Depending on how much accuracy you need, Google maps in their latest updates has a positioning feature that works without GPS. It works by triangulation between cell towers. It is only accurate to 1500 meters. It won't get you to a specific location, but if you are lost in the woods (and there is cell coverage) you will be able to find your way out.
