Anyone know where I can grab OS ver 4.1.0.377? It's no longer on Verizon's site.

I'd like to know that I have the old software - just in case 4.2 isn't all it's cracked up to be.

BB devices I've owned: 957 : 7750 : 7250 : 8703e : 8830 : 9530 : 9630

BES 4.1.6.16

I've received 3 missed calls and the icon/indicator for that will not dissappear now. I've rebooted, pulled the battery, I'm not sure how to get his off and its really kind of annoying. Anyone else have this?

Have you checked to see if there are messages in the SMS Inbox?

Yea, no messages. Other than the message of a missed call, which the indicator for the messsage would not dissappear either until I did the reboot. I dont even make/receive calls with it anyway, its stray wrong calls that people have dialed.

Red face For Dawg and others... My latest observations on 4.2 - 10-31-2007, 03:45 PM

I hear ya. I whined and moaned about certain aspects of 4.2 that I believe are problematic. But in fairness to you and other folks, I must admit that I didn't give some of the new features a fair shake.

So, on the advice of others here on the forum, I've loaded the BB Dimension Zen theme, which does indeed display ALL the icons for ALL the applications. And with this theme, I can loaded any photograph for the background, which does offer much greater flexibility for color contrasting, readability, etc.
I also like the colors utilized in the message screens while sorting emails, etc. Easier to differentiate things...

Some other observations:
1. With the BB Dimension Zen theme, the battery level indicator now shows full when it should show full (unlike the Verizon theme I mentioned in my previous post).

2. Also with the Zen theme, the main homepage displays icons and status for each messaging account, plus one applications icon, which takes you to the main applications screen, where ALL the icons now reside (like 4.1). Simple, clean display of just the important stuff.

2. The device is still sluggish. The new 4.2 OS puts a hurtin' on the ol' 8703e.

3. A few of the 4.1 ringtones, alarm tones and notifier tones are gone, including the tone I had been using for email alerts, etc. These have been replaced by some new tones. I had to go through all my Profiles settings and redo the tones. (I wish there was a "universal" tone feature)

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I feel better about 4.2 now, and I'm dealing with the changes. At this juncture, I'm leaning towards keeping 4.2. Besides, I'll be upgrading to a new device sometime in the not-too-distant future. I'm just waiting for the "right" new device to be released (probably next Spring).

There's no way to update/reinstall any OS on any BB with a mac unless you can run something like bootcamp or parallels. Find a friends PC.

I also notice useing the 4.2 OS that the screen flashes "like a quick flash of light" in some applications like Ygo. When i scroll through the icons a flash of light each time. Other than that Ive had no problems. Just wish there was voice notes.

I'm torn. I just got my 8703e to where I like it. If I do a backup and then install 4.2, will a restore get me back to 4.1 if I don't like it? This might sound silly... but being that it is an OS upgrade, I want to make sure before I move forward.

Was it worth it?

Thanks!

One issue I am having is when I receive a long email and scroll using the space bar, when I get to the more notice (I have auto more turned on) and more of the message loads, I am returned to the top of the message and have to scroll all the way to where the more message was to continue reading. If I use the wheel this issue does not present itstelf.

has anyone run into issues with the keyboard lock function in version 4.2? i downloaded it onto my verizon 8703e and now when i keyboard lock (not password lock, just the standard keyboard lock icon) and try to unlock with the scrollwheel, i scroll to 'unlock' and click it, and it immediately goes to the 'keyboard locked, you must press * + send to unlock' - what happened to this function and how can i fix it? is anyone else running into this issue?

and i couldn't even get it to activate in the theme settings even though it was there. I see it there, and I'm rolling back to 4.1 until the today theme can be used with 4.2

i have tried OTA for several today themes that are supposed to be for 4.2.1 and i cannot get any of them to work...for the business users i support on BES this is huge because they love that one glance answer for calendar, missed calls, and recent emails...

Hey bro - I believe this is a new feature in 4.2 - I read about this somewhere. I kind of find it annoying too but don't know of an option to enable or disable it. Sorry

Make sure that you have the latest BlackBerry Messenger installed (v4.2.1) following the OS upgrade. If not, try reconnecting to the Desktop Manager. Launch the Application Loader, and it should prompt you to update BlackBerry Messenger.

Both Bluetooth DUN and file transfers are now supported.
- I tried opening the Sprint Mobile Connection software and it just gets stuck on 'initializing' after having the 8703e connected to my laptop. I did notice that the small arrows that show up next to the Bluetooth sign keep dropping in out. In past it used to stay constant when a connection is made. Wondering if anyone else had this prob after 4.2 on Sprint 8703e.
Thanks

If DUN and File transfers are now supported, does that mean I can transfer my phonebook to my car stereo's bluetooth kit now?

That would be exciting!

I cannot answer that one since my car's Bluetooth kit does not support phonebook transfer. Under Bluetooth Options on the 8703e with OS v4.2.1.106, there is an "Address Book Transfer" setting with values of:
  1. All Entries;
  2. Hotlist Only;
  3. Selected Catogories Only; or
  4. Disabled.
I don't recall if this was present in OS v4.1.0.377. I have not found anywhere on the device to initiate a transfer.

I miss the today theme, but I've been rolling with the Vodaphone theme (it's in the ALX file) as a temporary work-around until we find a way to get the RIM today theme on there.

4.2.1 has fixed numerous other issues for me (my BT GPS doesn't drop link now when the phone is downloading data), and there are a few apps I've been wanting to use that require 4.2+, so there's no way I'm going back to 4.1.

So has anyone with Plazmic tried making a theme and it working with 4.2/8703e? I was under the impression you could tweak the today theme also...maybe this route to get something to work?

Default HELP!! Error after install - 11-01-2007, 05:45 PM

I decided to give the 4.2 a try as I have an 8703e from Alltel. I followed the steps and it said unable to install 3rd party apps during the upgrade. I waited and viewed the phone, it had an hour glass. Then it came up and says "Blackberry Platform 2.3.0.20" and under that it says *Empty*. It still acts connected when i plug it in to the computer it makes the noise and the blackberry device manager shows me its connected, the duration, and my pin. I decided to restore to what I had but when I go into the desktop manager the Backup and Restore options are both greyed out. Any ideas! This is my only phone maybe I shouldn't have tried it.

UPDATE:
I ran loader.exe and it detected and continued installation. It said 4.2 installed successfully. I will try out and let u know the results.

The platform is correct, but it sounds as if the OS itself never loaded onto the device. My suggestion would be to load the Alltel OS v4.1 firmware using the procedures documented elsewhere on the forum:
