Hot dam, it works now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys have made me the happiest BB owner today! I was ready to switch back to 4.1 to get the themes working but will not have to now.

Now the next problem I noticed. Anyone else having their battery drained 2x faster than 4.1? I used to charge the BB once a day, now it needs it twice. No apps changed, just the OS.

Was this with the default Verizon theme? There is a known bug (I personally had a call into VZW and RIM) with that theme that reports inaccurate battery level (i.e., too low: 3/4 bars at 100%, 2/4 bars at 85%, etc.). The battery level is accurately reported on the Status screen within the main BlackBerry Options application.

No, it just needs to be charged twice as much now. Any theme I use it's the same.

Hate to be ignorant about this but was just talking to a co-worker and he wanted to know what steps to follow to do this. When you say you loaded all the themes you wanted are you talking about putting them in the folder? I'm assuming you start DM first then execute javaloader within the folder that contains the themes. Also what other themes do you have other than BBDimension that you loaded? Thanks

Here's a modified ALX (and the COD) -- place the COD in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8703e-v4.2.1.106_P2.3.0.20\Java

And the ALX in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8703e-v4.2.1.106_P2.3.0.20

Fire up desktop manager, it should ask to update the BlackBerry core files on the device.

This should also stop it from trying to remove it.

I close all applications when not in use. I had a Motorola Q (worst thing ever made) so I know what it's like to have apps run all day for no reason.

All the apps were on 4.1 without issue except for BB Weather but I just installed that today so that is not it. Now that I have the today themes loaded I will see if that works better. I always used the today themes on 4.1 I never had to charged the BB more than once a day or every other if used less, such as weekends.

To be clear on this, just place the files in those directories and with starting up the DM and asking to update....the today theme will be loaded automatically without having to use the javaloader?

Select: UK, Free Download Area, Devices, RIM Devices, 8700 4.2.1 rel 180, then 8700M_PBr4[1].2.1_rel180_PL2.3.0.86_A4.2.1.108.exe.

Take the net_rim_theme_bbdimension_today_320x240_w.cod from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8700-v4.2.1.108_P2.3.0.86\Java and copy it to a different location (I used my desktop because I was lazy).

Use javaloader to load it to your device:
JavaLoader.exe -u load net_rim_theme_bb_dimension_today_320x240.cod

My device rebooted automatically after the load. Upon the OS loading, I now have the today theme as an option, and bPhone can be activated.

I have javaloader.exe since I have the JDE installed for Blackberry development, but I know that I've seen it online by itself.

The most likely reason that a couple of people were getting errors running JavaLoader as per the above is that the name of the .cod file provided in the posted instructions does not match the one included in the zip file. If you were cutting/pasting from his post, you'd get the error. The correct command line is:

JavaLoader.exe net_rim_theme_bbdimension_today_320x240_w.cod

Please note the '_w' prior to the .cod extension.

I have to admit that, after 3-4 days, my BB is slower. For instance, when going into a meeting and changing the profile while entering, it takes about 3 full seconds for a response. I consider that a pain.

You know, the derogatory personal comments aren't particularly productive.

I to have found my 8703e to be significantly slower, even after more than a week with the new version, and I have nothing but stock software on it. I'm not a BES user, either. That said, the iCal compatibility specifically has made the upgrade worth the performance tradeoff. I can find little else to recommend it, though.

My point is that these devices are supposed to enhance our productivity and quality of life, not get in the way of it. 3 seconds may not be a big deal to you, but an awful lot of stuff can happen in 3 seconds.

Very good points. Was going to express some of the same sentiments myself. On the flip side of the sluggishness of 4.2 is the ability to play wav files. To some of the users in our company this feature alone is worth the upgrade. Not having to call in to their office phone to retreive voice mails is a significant time and aggravation saver.

your opinion is noted but I still stand by my statement 3 seconds is not long at all. Takes longer than three seconds to get out of a chair is that any less productive? Took you longer than three seconds to type your message to me. What could you have accomplished in that time?

I'm siding with Dawg on this one. I mean, 2-3 seconds isnt life changing. I'm a impatient person myself but this isnt a big deal. Everyone has their own opinion though. If 2-3 seconds is that big of deal, then maybe its time to downgrade back to 4.1 instead of fussing about it?

Personally I'm happy with it, the occasional second lag is fine, it works great and gets the job done.

In all honesty I am on the go all day and into the night. It's not as much that specific 3 second interval, but moreso the flow that is lost. An example is an issue that I had on the train this morning. I had to adequately clear 400 e-mails from my phone; the search feature, which normally took about 1-2 seconds to collect about 20-30 e-mails as a group now takes at least 30-35 seconds. In the course of my day and night, this is a major hindrance. I'm more than likely going back to OS 4.1. I don't use this as a toy; it's business to me and as a manager I have to be anal.

Its a business device to me to as I am a Field Manager. I have noticed the more you use it the faster it gets. I really cant see a 20 second delay in anything I do on it daily. I get 50 to 90 emails a day on three different accounts and I haven't noticed the delays that you are mentioning. I am curious though what theme you are using? I have noticed the stock verizon theme is slower than others.

I also just took my Assistant's device which hasn't been updated (he is scared of technology) and we timed the devices doing different tasks they were less than 3 seconds on most functions. My device was faster in some regards but I also don't keep all the emails and things on mine as he does. I am thinking it may be a memory issue over OS.

Any way Good Luck and I didn't mean to be derogatory in my Anal remark.

Absolutely no offense taken! My comment about business was toward my phone, trying to get it to become part of the team haha.

The e-mail problem also makes me crazy because as I highlight the e-mails that I wish to delete, new e-mails are coming in and it cancels out the previous request. When it takes longer to highlight the e-mails, then it makes more problems because the original highlighting cancels out.

I use the Smoothie theme because I find it crisp and clean. I'm going to delete some apps that I don't use much, but I suppose there is no way to know which apps could be causing problems until I just start deleting them.

I downloaded MyUtils perhaps a week before I made the change. I like the apps, but they may be the problem. I don't recall the original OS being slower, though.

In 3 seconds, you can:
  • Travel 300 feet at highway speed
  • Miss a flight
  • Lose a multi-million dollar contract
  • Sign a treaty

The key is knowing when you can spare those 3 seconds. I could spare the time to type my previous message (and this one) because it was on "down" time. There are many other times during the day where the loss of three seconds may have a dramatic effect on me and my company's future.

I'm the VP of Consulting Services for a small but rapidly growing technology company. It's important to me that my tools be responsive and reliable. With the upgrade, my 8703e is now less so than it was before. I have to put up with it, though, because I value the improvement in calendaring functionality.

Anyway, I wiped my device, installed the blank IT policy that can be found in the FAQ, then proceeded to delete BBRY maps. I then resent my service books through the Sprint BIS site and was then able to get many of my Applications updated from older versions OTA. I got everything I wanted installed, then connected up over VPN with BBRY Desktop Manager and got the Enterprise Activation completed.

All is now well and BBRY Maps works perfectly!
Question. You are able to reactivate on your company's BES server by connecting over the VPN and with the Desktop Manager. How? I have always had to contact my BES Administrator to send an activation password.

Default Missing Internet Browser after 4.2 upgrade - 11-10-2007, 03:47 PM

Anyone figure out how to bring back the Internet Browser after upgrading to VZW 4.2 OS on the 8703e? I read in another forum where someone said that there is now only one browser, and that it will automatically switch between the Internet Browser & the BlackBerry Browser as needed. This is not the case for me.

Prior to the OS upgrade I did have two browsers: 1. the Internet browser, which would take me to the Internet using my VZW data plan, and 2. BlackBerry browser, which take me through my company's corporate network and on to the Internet after passing through the proxy server.
