Yes. i used to change my theme every week until i found the today theme. i like the fact that i can take a quick glance at my screen and know who just sent me an email or what my next appointment is. the dimmension today theme kicks every other theme to the curb.

also i haven't seen an answer to the mms question. since there is no option to attach media to a message i will have to guess that mms was not included in the 8703e's OS upgrade. which was the only reason i wanted to upgrade really. i guess that is my bad for not reading every post of every forum regarding this upgrade.

Talking 4.2 OS + Sprint 8703e + Bluetooth + Macbook = PAM (Phone as Modem) - 12-11-2007, 11:00 AM

Finally!!!!!!!

I know I'm a little late to the party, but Hella YeA. I just loaded 4.2 on my Sprint 8703e and am now able to pair with my Macbook and use the Phone as Modem (PAM) throught the Bluetooth. I'm so fricken excited I could just scream...but that might be a little gay so I'll keep it in check. This has been one of the biggest downsides to using a BB with the Mac's. Before I had to go into Parrallesl and use the Sprint Connection Manager to go throught the back to door to get internet function on the Mac side (a real pain), not any more.

I'm really just posting this so that other other 8703 / Mac users might find the info when doing a search on the subject. I supersingly didn't find anything when I was searching around so now maybe they will. You would think that this would be all over the place as it is such a boone to us Mac users.

P.S. No problems with BB Maps / Googlemaps / or the GPS what so ever

Default Potentially Stupid Question - 12-12-2007, 04:48 PM

I see reference to being able to open .wav attachments.

I get these sent to me from my home voice mail as attachments to my email. I have never before been able to open them.

When I try to do it after the upgrade, I get the following message:

"The document conversion failed."

Am I doing something wrong?

The messages are valid .wav files, as I can open them in my outlook on my laptop just fine. I have phone service with Vonage, if that matters.

Also--nobody yet seems to have answered the question on getting the GPS to work on Sprint. I have the 8703e. Any thoughts in that regard?

How do you think this will work with US Cellular. They seem to be VERY adimate about using their own software. I think they are GPRS though. Im assuming it would work.

If it doesnt though I suppose to can redownload the 4.1 from their site and be good to go huh??

Thanks Jon

I would LOVE to get 4.2 if I can be assured that it should work.

OH nevermind, I had a brain fart

The phones technical details on USCC.com says:

CDMA2000 1x (Digital)

if thats the case then this upgrade should work huh

Im affraid it would interfier with the providers software or settings is that true??

US Cellular is CDMA. This update will work just fine. It won't interfere with any provider settings, etc. You're good to go.

Default 4.2 is killing me! - 12-14-2007, 02:59 PM

Since I installed it on my VZW 8703e yesterday, my phone only connects outgoing calls about 50% of the time and my Google Talk is on the blink (i.e., constantly signing off on its own). Anyone else have this problem? Is there anyway to go back to 4.1? If so, what is the link. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Default Uncaught exception java.lang error when trying to read long emails - 12-14-2007, 04:30 PM

I just upgraded a VZW 8703 to the new OS and everything works except long emails. Has anybody received "Uncaught exception java.lang...." error when trying to read an email with "more" (a long email)?

Any ideas on how to resolve it? I am trying to fix this for a client remotely and they couldn't give me the entire error message.

Default Reinstalled Google Talk - 12-14-2007, 07:45 PM

I removed than reinstalled Google Talk and that helped my situation a lot! If you are having problems with Google Talk, try to delete than reinstall it. I must have had an old version of it or something.

Now, if I can only get my cell phone to make calls consistently . . . .

Hi,

I updated my Sprint 8703e with this OS, followed the instructions and the install was pretty straightforward. The whole process took nearly an hour to complete (almost like installing Windows!) and thankfully it retained my BES activation, so I didn't have to re-activate after the upgrade.

Couple of points though:

1. Most older themes stopped working, my favorite BB Dimension Today theme doesn't work and I don't know how to get it working again, if anyone can give me some pointers or suggestions, it will be much appreciated.

2. At first the phone seemed a lot more sluggish and I was actually hating it, even the smileys on BB messenger weren't coming up quickly, but with usage this seems to have gotten better.

3. There is a new Media icon which has pictures in it which can be assigned to caller ID, although this seems redundant, given the phone doesn't have a camera.

4. My phone now gets ID'd as a Verizon 8703e, not sure how this will affect any online services, but I'll keep you updated.

5. GPS works fine and I've installed the Facebook app as well.

Overall, I'm not sure if I've gained much out of the upgrade, seemed too tedious an upgrade in order to gain very less and in fact lose some in the bargain (especially the today theme).

IMO, if you haven't upgraded, you aren't missing too much.

Default Outgoing calls - 12-20-2007, 09:57 PM

8703e VZW here, and after the upgrade I couldn't make an outgoing call without either rebooting or cycling the radio off/on. I could make 1 or 2 calls before it went back to the "calling" state without connecting.

VZW tech couldn't solve it, so they gave me a new BB. Well, I put 4.2 on the new phone and the SAME problem is occurring.

What could be going on?

Not sure why you are having problems upgrading, but if they gave you a "new" BlackBerry, why didn't it have the new OS pre-installed?

Because it is a replacement 8703e in a sealed box, long before 4.2 existed.

Just received a new Vz BB and it had the old OS installed as well. And it wasn't a refurb. New 4.2 code from Vz caused it to be really laggy. The Telus code improved the speed some, but still laggy as compared to the 4.1 that originally came on it. Now to find somewhere with the old 4.1 that I can download it to go back to....

Rolled back to 4.1 last night and the phone works again. I will miss some of the cool features in 4.2 but will just wait for a new release or a new BB.

Default good 4.2 experience - 12-21-2007, 09:58 PM

My experience with the OS 4.2 upgrade has been quite positive. I love the usability improvements such as the ability to type a name directly from the home screen and have the BB return the appropriate phone numbers. This is a real time saver, bypassing the need to launch the address book.

I also am grateful for the ability to assign the middle button to the task switcher. For one handed operation this is a godsend.

As I've posted on a separate thread, I've noticed markedly improved Bluetooth connectivity with my Bluetooth headset, despite the many posts on these forums regarding problems with the 4.2 BT stack.

Certain third party apps also work much better, if you happen to have them installed. One such app, PocketDay works much more smoothly and adds features such as the ability to directly edit memos.

My biggest complaint is the inability to unlock the keyboard via the scroll wheel. This is a pretty big step backward, but given that OS 4.2 is optimized for trackball devices, I supposed it's to be expected.

Speed is an issue at times, but in my opinion, not even close to a dealbreaker. The Profile screen is slow to load and sometimes the home screen as well, but it hasn't significantly impacted my use. The new features and improved Bluetooth performance far outweigh these downsides.

Default 4.2 exp - 12-22-2007, 12:21 AM

I didn't experience any lagging, performance was fine.

However, on two 8703e's, I could not make outgoing calls reliably (CALLING...never connects) without cycling the BB on/off. I would love it if someone found a fix for this, evidently I am not alone. How could two BBs have the same exact issue?

Is there a possibility it could be something related to my laptop or DM?

Adding the Telus update to my deactivated verizon 8703e as we speak, to see if this alleviates some of the lagginess.

Default DM 4.2 on other computers? - 12-25-2007, 05:14 PM

If i'm away and want to upgrade my bberry 8703e, can i install the DM on the computer i have here, and run the software update on my bberry, then just delete the DM (it's not my computer) and install it again on my other computer when i get home? or will this mess up the bberry somehow? cause i know you have to deal with the vendor file in the folder system that comes with the DM...

I updated my sprint 8703e to 4.2 and all seemed fine until I couldn't activate on our BES. activation code wouldn't work. was getting error message on server. My IT guy is pretty smart, he wiped my handheld and tried again to no avail. Anyone else get this problem? My BIS worked. I ended up deleting 4.2 and reinstalling 4.1 and activation code worked and back on our BES. I really liked 4.2 too.
I used verizon would telus be better? (I did delete vendor file too)

Anyone else upgrade sprint 8703e and was able to reconnect with BES via OTA activation PW? One thing I did do was use my 4.1 DM to load 4.2. It all went OK without errors, but I did delete 4.1 and load 4.2SP2 so I think I'll reload 4.2 with Telus's OS and see if I can reconnect with BES

I figured I give the Telus v4.2 OS a try since the Verizon v4.2 OS was giving my Sprint 8703e issues with random reboots or blanking out but the problem still persists? Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Most of the time it happens while I'm using an application that requires a data connection like JiveTalk or the built-in web browser. If I downgrade back to Sprint v4.1 OS, the problems don't reappear. Oh well, I really enjoy the new features of v4.2 and will just wait it out till October when my contract expires and hopefully the Curve will be readily available and stable on Sprint.

The symptoms that were exhibited with the Verizon v4.2 OS still persists with the Telus v4.2 OS.

I highly doubt the Bell Mobility v4.2 OS will make a difference since the App version is the same at 4.2.1.110, just the package version changed from 4.2.1.184 to 4.2.1.186. Who knows though, perhaps the experts will chime in on what makes up the Pkg and App of the overall OS. I'm assuming it's the same, just the Pkg version gets upped when the make changes in the bundling, the applications are probably all the same version. Oh well, either way, I'll give it a try and see what's up since CDMA upgrades work for all carriers.

So far so good with the Bell v4.2 upgrade...seems a bit more laggy than Telus but I can deal with the lag versus the random reboots.

Hey seaneboyee - I used to have the Verizon 4.2 loaded up and it was okay. I saw the Bell v4.2 and couldnt resist thinking the 4.2.1.110 was going to make a difference over the 4.2.1.106 - So far same deal except for this morning I had a random reboot (which I've seen on 106 as well but very rare)just figured I'd chime in - thanks and I'll keep the forums informed. Take care ma fellow BB Addicts -

1. Device seems more sluggish when doing things like selecting applications, etc.

2. New Applications icon, which takes you to another Applications screen. This contains things like Gmail and other Google Services items, Blackberry Maps, Calculator, Beyond411, Quicknote, BBLight, Brickerbreaker (some of these are aftermarket items I already had, obviously). I don't like this setup - it now takes one more step to get to these applications.

3. New Media icon, which takes you to the Media screen (Ringtones and Pictures). You can now receive these things via Bluetooth. You can now go into media options and see what the file size is for each tone, picture, etc.
I see that my device has a 12MB memory limit.

4. New Tools icon, which takes you to the Tools screen, which contains Taks, MemoPad, Password Keeper, and Help.

5. New Settings icon, which takes you to the Settings screen, which contains E-mail Settings, Alarm, Screen/Keyboard, Mobile Network, Options, Set-up Bluetooth, and Turn Wireless Off.

6. Profiles menu looks different, and includes an Advanced menu choice, which takes you into the standard profile editor. Again, another step to impede you.

7. On the Verizon theme's red banner bar at the top (home screen), where the signal strength, battery level, Bluetooth, EVDO, and other indicators are, it sure looks like they've bumped up the font size of the day/date/time. Not alot, mind you, but at least it's a noticeable increase (unless I'm seeing things). If this is the case, I like it. I wish I could make it even bigger. (Maybe there's a way; I'm not done exploring.)

8. When the device locks, the Owner Info is now displayed in much smaller font. I don't know why they'd do this. I can't figure out if it's adjustable or not. Whatever...

9. In the Status screen (via options, or by simply pushing ALT, CAP, H in succession), the battery strength indicates 100%, but the battery level icon on the home screen shows 3/4 full. What's with this? I'll charge fully again and see what happens.

10. Some of the Blackberry ringtones, notifiers, alarms, etc. have changed. Some tones are gone, replaced by some new ones.

That's all I've noticed so far. I'm sure I'll discover other things, too. All in all, I don't see anything truly amazing. Perhaps I'm missing something. Others will certainly discover other items.
Yea, my BB seems to be sluggish as well... it also never shows more than 3/4 full on the battery meter, however when i go into options-> status it shows 100%... i don't think it's hurt my battery life so i'm not too worried about it; i'm sure they'll come out with a fix for that.

I'm just still waiting on verizon to make the 8703e compatible with VZ Navigator... anyone have an update on this?
