Desktop Manager > Backup. I always do a complete backup AND and sync with Outlook (which I do everyday, regardless).

The best thing you can do is perform a full backup of your device using Desktop Manager. I'd recommend doing a backup at regular intervals, even if you are not making changes to your OS, in case your device is lost/stolen/broken, etc.

You want 4.2, Service Pack 2, withOUT the Media Manager software. Yes, you can sync at both home and office.

Did you buy your phone new or used? If new, you can use the CD that came with the device.

If used, or you no longer have the CD, you can download it from blackberry.com. Although, that site seems to be severely lagging right now....

When you are installing the update I believe it does the backup and then the restore for you anyways. Quite the easy process honestly. Everyone on this site makes things so easy I just followed these directions.

I dropped my Blackberry model 7250 and the screen went blank... oh crap now I'm in trouble. Ordered a new one through the office, hooked up the old one and did a backup using the blackberry desktop manager. Hooked up the new one (model 8700) and did a custom restore and selected only the contacts... and just like that all 785 came over in about 30 seconds. Whew, got lucky, now I know to make sure you keep a backup copy of your contacts on your computer so if anything happens to your blackberry you don't have to start from scratch.
