Default 8700c Tethering Huge Issues - 06-20-2008, 10:07 AM

Hey I searched and Searched and cannot find anything here about this. I am trying to use the 8700c as a tethered modem with AT&T. I have tethering on my plan and I sat on the phone with AT&T support for 2.5hrs yesterday and they came up with nothing..... So here is the issue, I have the device connected and I have BB desktop manager installed. The manager sees the device as connected via usb-pin:..... Also I have it as a modem within the device manager with the connection string AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular". So all good there as well. But at&t connection manager will not see the modem, nor can I query the modem within the device manager. Here is the log that I get:

Does anyone know what security policies on the BB need to be set to allow tethering?

I am no expert, but someone told me that you have to have tcp settings as:

APN: isp.cingular
Username for APN: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGULAR1
in order to be able to tether on AT&T

or try this setting from BBFAQ

Cingular (modem compatible)
Gateway IP: ?
Port: ?
APN: isp.cingular
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1

there are so many APN/tcp combinations for Cingular/AT&T
let us know what you find out.

I wish I could even get that far, I can't even query the modem let alone dial something. The issue here is communication between the computer and the blackberry modem. I mean BB desktop manager can see it, so you would think I could query it but nope. I definitely wont be able to connect until I can do at least that much. Thank you though!!!

Can't you make the changes on the handheld?
Options>>Advanced Options>>TCP
RE-register the handheld from the HRT tables
Re-Send Service Books from BlackBerry Internet Service

Also, are you using AT&T Communications Manager
available at Support | Answers to your cell phone questions | AT&T, formerly Cingular

On your 8700c nav to Options>>Advanced Options>>TCP>>fill in the info
APN: isp.cingular
Username for APN: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGULAR1
all case sensitive!!!!!!
click the trackwheel
click SAVE

On your 8700c nav to Options>>Advanced Options>>Host Routing Table>>[press trackwheel]>>Register Now. You should get a message "Registration Message Sent">>click OK

On your handheld's web browser type in the address: BlackBerry Internet Service
type in your user id and password>>on the left side menu click on service books>>click send service books>>you should get a message "service books sent"

Make sure that connectivity is set to USB. Turn off the computer. Connect the tether, connect the BB. Turn on the BB and make sure password protection is disabled. Turn the coputer back on. You must follow this procedural order just like connecting a serial cable.

I followed the instructions in the link I sent you and I was easily able to query my bb as modem. I did notice that you definitely have to leave desktop manager running in the background.
