Default Latest OS: 8703 4.2.1.201/4.2.1.119 (CDMA) - 06-23-2008, 05:09 PM

The 4.2 device update is out for Sprint (4.2.1.119). This will work on any carrier's CDMA 8703 Handheld device.

Pkg Ver: 4.2.1.201
App Ver: 4.2.1.119
Plt Ver: 2.3.0.25

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...BB765225CE8C0E

Instructions for installing on any 8703 from any carrier:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

Previous latest OS thread: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...-110-cdma.html

This OS is still missing the Today theme files -- I've created and attached the COD & ALX you will need to load on your device for Today themes to work.
Attached Files
File Type: zip 8703e Today Theme.zip (130.6 KB, 433 views)

Note: On my drive home today I noticed my BB 503'd. Hitting reset brought it back to life. I've recently installed a couple of new apps, so I've removed them, but I'm thinking the most likely culprit is my addition of the Today theme.

If anyone else updates and uses the today theme, let me know if you have any issues. I've done this on all previous releases of 4.2 for the 8703e and had no issues. So if you see a 503, let me know, and I'll dig up another version of the COD and update my original post.

If you don't add the Today theme and see 503s, that would be nice to know too, since that then it would be an app/OS issue.

Default Newest Desktop manager is 4.5, rather than 4.3 - 06-23-2008, 08:35 PM

I am just a novice compared to most people on this forum, but I went to the RIM page just now to dowload the latest Desktop manager and it is version 4.5, not 4.3 as mentioned in this post. Not a big deal, just thought I'd mention this.

The Vodaphone Today theme IS included in this release, file name "net_rim_theme_120_today_320x240_w.cod".
I just had to delete the vendor.xml file, then edit BlackBerry.alx to include it.

Yep -- that's the COD I included above. I don't know why this file has been missing from 4.2 CDMA releases.

I thought it would be easier for most users to just add it in afterwards with the app loader than editing the blackberry.alx file

The previous latest OS thread listed the improvements. Any noticeable changes between 4.2.1.110 and 4.2.1.119?

Does anything happen if you don't delete the vendor.xml file?

luvmousie, if your BB is a Sprint-branded device, and this OS is a Sprint release, there is no need to remove the vendor.xml file.

If you do remove it, still, there is nothing that will happen, no change occurs in any file in the OS upgrade.

Does anyone know what was changed in this version? And How do I add the today theme to my handheld? When I click on the Today Theme should I open or save?

I don't know the changes.

Is the Today theme loaded in your Options > Themes? If so, click on it, and close the screen that theme should be active.

It's in the original post -- download the attached ALX/COD and load it in the Application Loader.

What are you talking about? The original post was for a differant version? If your talking about the fist post in this thread then read it and you mistaken

Not sure on this either - I just upgraded last nite - everything seems the same but slightly smoother - still going thru everything - if anyone notices anything please post -

luvmousie...I believe the vendor file needs to be deleted if you are not a sprint customer in order to see the upgraded software on the DM.

* just fyi * I had no issues with the upgrade...today theme was fine -

No. 8700 needs an 8700 OS. 8703 won't work on an 8700.

Today Theme? I looked for one but could not find it. Are you talking about the third party app? I tried it but wasn't that crazy about it. I'm used to the today screen on my pearl. I haven't seen any real changes since I did the update this am. The 8703 is my wifes phone though, so I'm not sure how much playing with it I will be doing after today.

Is there anything else that has changed that people have noticed?

Does anyone know if this will work with an Alltel 8703e? I have the v4.2.1.110 now, is it worth the upgrade? I've got the white screen of death before so I'm just trying to be cautious this time around

Hi All,

Can someone please let me know what fields need to be edited or added in the blackberry.alx file specifically for the "today" theme to load properly?

Thank you!

Hi Everyone,

I have an 8703e with US Cellular. I just followed the instructions in the post on how to update the OS. I am running DM 4.5 and am connecting my BB to the DM with my bluetooth dingo since I can't get my cord to work for some reason.

Everything is connecting fine with the phone and DM, but the AppLoader, Media Manager and Device Switch Wizard are grey'd out and I can not select them. I would really like to update to the 4.2 OS because I have programs that I want to add, but they only support the 4.2 OS.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You can't use bluetooth to upgrade the OS. You MUST use USB.

Ugh. I've had two different USB cords and neither worked. They were a generic brand that I got from US Cellular. The DM would recognize the phone for 3 seconds, disconnect for 3 seconds, and repeat. Do you know if there's a BB specific cord or something I can get?

Is your USB cable plugged to the rear USB ports? Not the front, not a monitor USB port and not a USB hub.

Also, are you on a corporate BES that would disable any updates such as this?

I've plugged it into every port on the computer, 2 in the back, 2 on the side. And no, I'm not a corporate BES.

Keep it in one of the ones on the rear.

Where did you get the BB from? Look at Options > Security > General Settings > scroll to the bottom of the screen, is anything listed Services?

the BB came from US Cellular. The phone was purchased in January. I've bought both cords from US Cellular as well, within the past month. Never used the DM before.

The service listed is: BBFS1 [GTALKNA1] (AES)

If you have a service listed under Security, you are either on a BES, or the phone came with one.

IT policy is removed, but the phone/DM are still doing the same thing - connecting for a few seconds, disconnecting, etc. I would really like to be able to use the DM to sync with the programs on my computer, but in order to do so, I need to get the 4.2 OS.

Now DM seems to have a problem - it's had an error pop up twice and shut the program down each time.

Now I'm in trouble -

I can't connect via bluetooth - it keeps asking for the security code and it won't accept the one I had set it up with.

I was somehow able to connect via the cable, I started the update of the OS and 10 minutes in it disconnected.

I have no way of connecting the phone to the computer. I also can't use the phone, there's a white screen with a box with a "no" circle going through it and the number 507 underneath.

Other than giving up and going to get an iphone, any ideas?

It should be available at some point. No word on any dates, though, as it depends on the carriers. It's been developed, though.

Default 8703E Device Software (updated from 4.1 to 4.2.1.110) - 12-31-2008, 06:29 PM

Am on Corporate BES - updated device s/w to 4.2.1.110 on my BB. Since that time, all of my emails on my BB (corporate/personal) are showing diagonal lines (1/2" wide) of red and white. The lines remain when I reply or respond. If I forward the email to my desktop (laptop), the red chunky lines are not there. I have cleaned up my themes and only have those offered by VZW (not 3rd party). I would like to revert back to the 4.1 software - can I uninstall this version? My desktop manager will not allow me to select a previous version. Please advise on the uninstall and also how to remove the lines - I don't particularly care for this new version, some options have changed. Please advise.

Go to Options >Security Options >General Settings. Scroll down to "Message Colors." Change them to "None."

It's a feature added to easily differentiate between different email accounts or between emails and pins. In OS 4.5 it's been changed to a colored outline around the text box.

There's no need to revert back to 4.1. I'd recommend sticking with 4.2 until someone releases 4.5 for the 8703.

I was wondering if you guys could help out.

I just upgraded to 4.2 on my 8703.
It failed during the transfer.
There was a message saying that my files were backed up.

I successfully installed the new OS on the second try but now I am stuck with no data on my blackberry. No contacts, emails etc.

How do I get this back? Does anyone know where my backup files are stored?

Followed the instructions carefully and it was perfect! A little strange looking at first glance with no theme installed, but once I did that it was perfect!

Great job!
