4.5 was nice while it lasted, but I'm giving up on it for now and moving back to 4.2. It does have some nice new features, but the lack of google maps (the 90% freeze problem) and missing bbmaps was too much for me. The random hour glass for what seemed like minutes at a time also got very annoying. This OS seems to be very unstable, and it probably shouldn't have been released as a non-beta OS.

I was able to successfully use the google maps workaround to get 2.2.1 working, but the voice search was broken. Messing around trying to get google maps voice search working with this OS I did something (not sure what) that triggered the 90% freeze problem again, and the workaround was just too much work to do for a second time. At this point I decided to just move back to google maps 1.6.4 since other posts say that this works with OS 4.5, but I installed it over the top of 2.2.1 without deleting 2.2.1 first, and this has really confused my blackberry. When I run google maps now it is still the 2.2.1 version that is there, and of course it locks up. According to the applications list I don't have google maps installed, so I can't delete it.

I have seen some other strange things as well. When I hit one of my convenience keys I get a message that just says "OK" and things lock up completely for a few minutes. After rebooting the key was back to normal.

I'm dumping 4.5 now before I lose the ability to do a backup as well. I'm going to downgrade to 4.2 while I still can.

The Google Maps hanging is an issue with your IT policy's application control policy. Not sure if it's an issue with BES or the OS 4.5 but it only happens if you're on an application control policy.

Yes, I have been reading the posts about google maps hanging in the other forums. I think you said that you were able to get it installed properly by temporarily removing the application control policy and then applying it again later. I'm not sure what exactly this policy controls, but I am guessing that our IT department would not want to disable it permanently. They are also not going to be happy if they have to do this temporarily for every user who wants to install google maps.

Some of the posts also mentioned other BES settings that could be changed, possibly on a permanent basis, but I didn't see any confirmation that these fixes were working for other people. Is this still the case, or did I miss a thread somewhere?

I have the beta version 4.5.0.37 installed, so now when I'm trying to install the official version - which has the same version number - the desktop manager says that there is no upgrade available.

I tried to uninstall the new version and install the older 4.2.1.107, but I got a fatal error message. I'm using desktop manager 4.5.

So is my only option to wait for the next official release?

Default Completed 4.5.0.52 load on 8700g - 07-09-2008, 07:39 PM

Installation was uneventful and completed successfully. OS reload time was normal. No fried SIM card - so far.

Noticed 3 additional advanced options: Wireless Upgrade, GPS, and Spell Check. The Internet Browser has a new opening look: GoTo, Google Search, Bookmarks, and a History on the same page divided into three major sections. Browser may be little faster overall - after initial caching is done.

Messages have more of a windowed or partitioned look. I don't have the HTML email view but that may require additional server support.

Nice upgrade for my aging 8700g. Everything runs and looks good. :smile

Try Goggle search using "os 4.5 upgrade." Lots of information on the web and on this forum.

8700C on AT&T running BES/BIS services. Google maps works fine. Really happy with the changes. Have one small issue with RSA Secure ID, as I'm unable to import the token after installing ver 3.0.0. Not a big deal since I also have hard FOB, but would like to get it going. If anyone got it to work please let me know.

I look Google, I look in “beta you than me”. But no one’s wrote what are the major improvements.

Just find this:
8700/8703/8705

• Spell check (H) • BlackBerry Maps with Points of Interest (H) • New pictures and ringtones applications (H) • Voice note recording (H) • Microsoft Office document editing with DocumentsToGo (H) • Native format attachment downloading (S) • HTML e-mails (S) • Over-the-air device upgrades (S) • Free/busy calendar lookup (S) • Searching the server for old e-mail messages (S)

Someone could help and if could post pictures even better.

Default OS 4.5.0.37 (52) on 8700g - 07-13-2008, 05:25 PM

OS still working fine. Only thing I have noticed is BB Messenger contacts are not recognized after a reset or battery pull. This problem has already been we documented and discussed as an issue on 4.5.0.37.

On first run after reboot (soft or hard). BB Messenger asks to 1) send PIN request for permission to add sender to contact list or 2) to delete contacts. You must pick one. BB Messenger still works and messages can be sent and received in either case.

Why? Looks like contact status is not being properly saved/initialized or BB Messenger 4.5 is not compatible with contacts saved using BB Messenger 4.2 or earlier. I will test this by deleting my contacts and adding them using 4.5. Followed by a battery pull and a soft boot. Should be interesting since my contacts were restored from BB Messenger 4.2.

Not a major problem, if you don't have many contacts. The problem is could be very annoying if your contact list is long.

Results will be posted after test is over.

So, working pretty well on an 8700C on T-Mobile. But, I guess I forgot to remove PTT, any idea how to remove PTT form the unit.

Also, I am using Empowers BESMailbox, which is now working wierdly. When the mailbox is opened, it states at the top "unfiled messages" instead of like in the past, when it listed my BES mailbox address. Also, when I try to cancel out of it with the side button, it basically brings me to the "messages" folder, and not to the desktop, like it used to in version 4.2 Any one have any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael

JiveTalk would not launch for me after this upgrade. The infamous java.null exception was thrown. Did anyone else get this, overcome this, or was a non issue?

Discussed many times on the forum. You probably didn't install Documents To Go. If you don't install Docs To Go, then you get java errors in 4.5.

All databases are compatible both directions. I don't know why your address book won't restore.
