Default Questions About Blackberry - 07-12-2008, 09:44 PM

Basically here is where I'm at: I have an 8700g that I bought unlocked off of TigerDirect (Don't know why I just didn't get an 8700c, I didn't trust anyone on e-bay or I'd have got a curve.)

This is my first blackberry and I'm for sure getting texting on it and considering internet as well.

So now for my Questions:

1.) My cousin told me I'd have to call AT&T to do something in order to text, is this true?

2.) I went through the multiple AT&T data plans and I have no clue which would be best/cheapest for me to get. The most I'll really do is get on myspace and just websurf when I'm bored.

3.) If I have unlimited texting, does that cover messaging on Yahoo/MSN with my phone or does that charge internet fees as well? =\

4.) What on earth is the reason for the 'Turn Wireless Off/On' shit. I've assumed that when it's off I can't make calls 'cause when it's off my home screen says 'Off' where my service bars usually are.

Is this just to turn on/off the calling or is there something more?

I think that's pretty much it. Unless there is anything you guys think I should know.

Thanks in advanced.

Wirelessly posted

1. You won't need to call AT&T to text because all of the SMS settings are on your SIM card.

2. Get an unlimited data plan. No one can resist the mobile internet experience on a BlackBerry.

3. Use the MSN and Yahoo apps for the BlackBerry (both free) or get something like JiveTalk to combine them all. Texting to MSN is very tedious.

4. First, don't swear. It's like a flight mode so you can use your phones non-network features on airplanes or in places like hospital rooms where connectivity is forbidden.

If you don't have a data plan is using yahoo and msn going to charge for internet use as well?

I don't know if I'll get the internet 'cause it's 30 dollars a month. I'm only working until September and then I'm back in school. =\

I know I'm getting the unlimited texting though. So will yahoo only charge me texting fees?

Yahoo and MSN use data, not SMS. Read the faq here about setting up your TCP settings. You might get charged for the data. All is not free.

If you don;t get a BB Data Plan the cheapest IM is OZ. It will allow you to send IMs to your Yahoo contacts via SMS thus using your Unlimited SMS plan... However, you will be charged .10 to .25 cents for the Login process each time you log into OZ-YIM, via AT&Ts Pay Per Use plan.

I got the 8700g off of there, unlocked of course. It was 159 dollars + the cost of shipping AND a 1 year warranty on it so it was actually about 191

And no, they don't have it now. =\
Dunno if it's just out of stock or what.

It's a great phone though, you may wanna try getting on Amazon to buy it. It may be "out dated" in some peoples opinion but I honestly love my phone, I don't care what people think about it.

I'd love to have a Blackberry curve, of course, but this one was cheaper. Whenever I can get my upgrade (next august >_<) I'll probably get the latest Blackberry from AT&T then.

Oh wow, where can I get it at? If it's ONLY 10-25 cents ONLY when I login then that would be great. I don't really need full internet just so I can get on yahoo and msn and occasionally on myspace.

Thanks and link to OZ DL please. ^_^
