Thumbs down Battery problem? - 06-26-2009, 08:18 AM

I got an 8700g from e-bay yesterday, and it works beautifully, except for one problem.

When it's on battery, right in the middle of an operation like, say, exiting out of the browser, it'll just shut off. No warning, and the battery status will say 90%. However, when on the charger, it works like a champ.

I've put it through tests, trying things that happened when the unit shut off on battery, while it's on charger. This only happens on battery.

One thing I noticed was that the battery stayed on 85% while charging for quite some time. Oddly enough, though, the unit stayed on while on battery while I upgraded the OS through the desktop software.

My question is: does this sound like a battery problem? I've tried to check for things like loose battery doors, and so forth...nothing like that is going on. The good news is that the seller is sending a replacement battery, but it just seems odd that it would just shut off with no low battery warning, and that's the only thing that concerns me, but again, I put it through its paces on the adapter, with no problems.

I'm thinking maybe the battery is corrupt? Is it possible for it to give a "false read" and say it's 90% charged when it's really not?

Thanks in advance.

Try cleaning the battery contacts, on both the device and the battery itself.

1st Step in Troubleshooting: Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan?
2nd Step in Troubleshooting: Pull the Battery.

Thanks, I tried that. It didn't work. What I've found is that when I leave it on the charger, it seems to stay on 90% status. When I run off of battery, the phone seems to shut off the moment that the battery drops to 85%. This leads me to believe that it's the battery, since there are absolutely no problems when it runs off of charger.

Maybe that's why it was being sold on ebay.

Right, because everything that's sold on ebay is defective, right?

I didn't buy it from some fly-by-night private seller. I bought it from a company with over 20,000 positive feedback, and the phone itself works. Based on my findings, the battery dies at 85%, which says to me that it's defective.

And oh....the ebay seller you love to slam so much, because according to you, everything on ebay's a scam, is sending a new battery, not even charging for shipping.

Well, "Francis", maybe your snide comment "Maybe that's why it was being sold on ebay," had something to do with it. You make arrogant assumptions about ebay, and as a seller on the site, I take great offense to that, Francis.

Ah...so you feel that you have a committed responsibility to defend ALL of ebay...just because you're a seller there?

Get over yourself.
