Hello. I just bought a blackberry 8700 and i wanted to unlock it, although someone told me that the phone will not work with a nextel sim, unlocked or not. Is this true?

Nextel uses iDEN which is a totally different technology from GSM which ATT uses. You need a Nextel phone to use on their network. Unlocking cannot change the tecnology the phone uses.
