Default Hard Reset?? - 04-24-2006, 10:02 PM

I'm sure there must be an answer to my question posted somewhere, but I sure can't seem to find it!

Is there a way to do a real hard reset of the 8700c, ie, putting everything back to factory defaults? I've seen many mentions of taking out the battery to do a hard reset, but that doesn't seem to do anything for me--and I've left it out for a while.

I've also tried wiping the handheld, but that really only removes user data, not 3rd party applications, etc.

Anyone know how to go about this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Soft Reset:

Simultaneously press Alt+Cap+Delete to perform a soft reset.
Note: This reset will not result in data loss.

Hard Reset:

Remove and reinsert the battery to perform a hard reset.
Note: This reset will not result in data loss.

Master Reset When Desktop Cradle is Available:
WARNING: A master reset will result in the loss of ALL user data! Proceed with caution.

Ensure that the latest Desktop Manager and Handheld software are both installed on the user's computer. If they are not, install them.
Place the device in the cradle.
In the Desktop Manager software Select the Application Loader.

Click Next until you get to the list of applications to be downloaded to the device.
Instead of clicking "Finish" click Advanced.
Check both check boxes to erase all application data.
The device should display "Loader Activity...".
When this is complete the device should contain just the applications, but no user specific information
Master Reset When Desktop Cradle is Not Available:
WARNING: A master reset will result in the loss of ALL user data! Proceed with caution.
Note: If the device's keyboard has failed or is suspected to have failed, the cradled method outlined above must be used.

Scroll to the Settings icon and press Select (to select push the trackwheel in).
Scroll to the Options icon and press Select.
Scroll to Security Options and press Select.

Scroll to General Settings and press Select.

The General Setting screen will appear.

Click the trackwheel, Select Wipe Handheld Data.

The device is going to confirm that the data will be erased. Select Continue.
WARNING: A master reset will result in the loss of ALL user data!

Enter "blackberry" to confirm the handheld wipe.

Thanks very much for the quick response. I've actually tried both of these, but neither really does what I want.

There must be a way to reset the entire device back to the state it was in out of the box from Cingular, no?

Yes, search for a program called "Javaloader". You need to download it, unzip it (it is normally zipped) and run it from a DOS Prompt.

The format of the DOS command is

javaloader -usb wipe

This will wipe out both data, programs and third party apps.

You then can reload the handheld operating system through Desktop Manager's Application Loader.

No it will not do that. Sorry. That won't work.

Wipe handheld does not erase installed applications. It only removes customer data. He wants to erase the applications he's loaded.

Try that with Google Talk.
That is not a fool proof method....

Thanks! This appears to have done exactly what I wanted.

But, now I seem to have a bit of a problem. My 8700 has a little icon on it like an application window and a "don't" sign, along with the number 507, which I assume means that it has no applications on it.

When I use the application loader, however, it says there's not any software available to install on my handheld. (I've tried this with both the Cingular version I got with the phone and the Bharti version of the Desktop Software.)

Help--any ideas??!!

Use Apploader and reinstall the OS. The 507 error is usually when it a) has a really bad crash b) doesn't have an OS

Locate "Vendor.XML" on your C: drive and delete it.
Then restart Desktop Manager.

Default Still no luck. - 04-25-2006, 09:44 AM

Thanks to both of you, but still having an issue.

Have deleted the Vendor.xml file and I'm still getting the same message. When I run the loader, it says:

No system software was found for your device. Contact your system administrator or service provider for information on obtaining device software.
I always hate that message since I'm the admin.

If I select the blackberry.alx file on my C: drive by clicking add, it says "No additional applications designed for your device were found"

Any other suggestions? Might have to offer a reward soon!

Do you have Cingular service? (I'm guessing you do, but it doesn't hurt to ask).

Try a http://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/...E4F82F9F00E7D4

Download the latest handheld operating system for your BB.
Execute the downloaded file.
Try again.

That link will give you Desktop Manager only; not the handheld operating system required.

Yeah, I know--I had already tried this.

I thought at one point when I went to download the software it asked which carrier it was for (I assume that one has the OS?), but when I download it now, there's only one choice.

Where can I get the OS?

I was trying to post a weblink to the cingular OS download site. I did PM you and hopefully that one will work..

Thank you all for your help--looks like I'm back in business. Part of the problem was due to my stupidity--I downloaded only the desktop software and not the 4.1 software for the 8700, which of course fixed the problem!
