Default telenav - 8700c works well? - 05-01-2006, 01:41 PM

I am on Cingular 8700c. My garmin unit died and I need to get on a trip tomorrow. Anyone who used telenav can comment how good they are? like accuracy and reliability compared to TomTom or Garmin?

Many thanks for your input.

I use google streets. It's excellent, free and I don't need a GPS converter device.

I don't see the 8700 as being supported on the telenav site.

Sorry about that. I clicked T-Mo instead of Cingular.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

What would telenav do that google maps mobile doesn't?

telenav gives real time voice guided turn by turn directions. It will automaticlly reroute if you go off course. You do not need to know where you are starting from just where you are going as it will read your GPS location.

Google maps is OK for going point-point whith known locations but if you stray off route, do not know the address of where you are, etc it is difficult to use.

Telenav is a great asset for those who travel.

Right, in other words, telenav tracks your real time moving by sending the signal to satelite, while Google mobile just give you a driving direction list and it does not track where you are.

I called telenav, and was told 8700c needs to buy a GPS Receiver which costs $199 on their web site. Anyone knows where to get a receiver like this for a much lower price? I used Belkin before for less than a hundred dollars with Dell PDA and it works great. But I am not sure what exactly works with telenav.

This issue has come up before, the 8700 (all bb's I believe) do not have memory expansion slots and therefore do not have enough memory to be good navagation devices. When I moved over to a bb, I stopped using my PDA (an IPAQ) which had a great navagation system called Navteq in it. I paid less than $100 for the bluetooth satellite receiver and maps for all of the USA and Canada. I wiped out all the info in the IPAQ freeing up a huge amount of space, loaded a 1 gig card and have the entire country. A liitle velcro on the back and carrying the opposite velcro in the briefcase allows me to mount it in any rental car. It works great and takes up very little space. The screen is much larger than on the 8700 as well.

I have been leaving my garmin 60c at home when I travel since installing google maps on my 8700g. As has been repeated many times, you need some awareness of where you are in order to use it, but a side benefit is that I learn the roads much quicker as a consequence of having to actually navigate. Killer app!
