I am trying to figure out a keyboard combination for the PC traditional backspace key which allows the positioning of the cursor without deleting characters. Can anyone help..?

hold down the alt button and move the trackwheel for horizontal positioning

Sure, you can hold down the 'ALT' key and while holding it down use the track wheel to scroll side to side. If you wish to scroll up and down then just move the track wheel.
