Default Can i temporarily suspend BES email, but keep receiving SMS & phone calls? - 05-29-2006, 08:23 AM

Hi,

I'm a total n00b and in fact I don't even have a Blackberry yet!! I'm thinking of getting the 8700g because my company runs BES and fully supports push email and contacts, etc, and I like the look of this model.

Before I buy it, I wanted to check if it is possible for me to selectively suspend receiving emails from the BES server from time to time, but still allow phone calls and, more importantly, SMS's to come through? For example, on weekends i'd like to shut off work email, but still allow my friends to call me and/or SMS me. Then on Monday morning I want to allow the emails to come through again.

If this is possible, can I do it from the 8700g handset and not have to get the BES administrator to make a change on that end?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks,
Digi.

Yes, that is possible. The easiest why to do this, is to install the latest firmware from Telstra for the 8700g.

As acnst said, download and install the latest 8700 software from Telstra. In Options / Network there is a setting to turn Data Services "off". That will allow text and voice only. Not sure how thrilled your work will be, but that should work.

Go into Messages then click your trackwheel and choose Options. From there, go to Email Settings. Turn the first option, Send email to handheld, to No. Save the changes.

If you dont want to install a different version of the handheld software, you could create a filter that doesn't forward any email to the handheld.

Remember, please try searching first!

Need a screenshot? ... Like JavaLoader?
Try using BBscreen .....Use JL_Cmder!
or BBScreenShooter!

Will this stop ALL email (Personal Email from Web Client?).

I have a filter setup to stop all BES email (that I plan to use while on vacation) but I can still get my personal mail.

This can be done via the phone.

Thank you all very much. This is exactly what I wanted to know!

The other thing I meant to ask is that I have been told by a work colleague who has an older model of BB (the 6280 I think) that when he is on a call and a new email or calendar entry arrives, his phone conversation drops out temporarily and then returns..! He says it's really distracting and annoying, and as such he now carries two devices - his old Nokia phone for phone calls, and his BB for email and calendar, etc.

I definitely do not want to carry two devices, so I was wondering if this problem is known, but has been solved in newer versions of the software? Or if it was related to specific handsets, etc?

Thanks again for everyone's speedy answers! I'm sure i'll be a frequent visitor to this site once I buy my 8700g.

Cheers,
Digi.

maybe a problem with his settings on the bb/phone?

while on a call, data will not go through. once the call ends, data should flow through (although if you are using data and you get a call and there is no continous data traffic at the time of the incoming call, the data session should be interrupted).

this should change with next gen voice/data service that can support simultaneous voice/data traffic.

EDIT:
gsm service is assumed (since you said it is a 6280), not 100% sure how cdma voice/data is treated, although i think it is similar.
