Just got mine... nice BB but the intended purpose of email sync does not seem to happen... does anyone know of a way around this please?

Emails do not synch between Outlook and Blackberry. It only synchs Contacts, Calendar, Memo and Tasks - the standard PIM functions.

Well there is not much point in having a Blackberry and not using it for email, if that is what you mean. But every Blackberry comes with a blackberry.net account on the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) (assuming that you have a data plan).
If you want your Outlook email on your Blackberry there are a few options: forward via Outlook Rules to your blackberry.net account, have your service provider (or admin department) auto-forward at the server level to your blackberry.net account, use the Desktop Redirector to auto-redirect to your handheld (which I believe again uses your blackberry.net account), set up POP3 access on your Blackberry (through BIS) to the same account that Outlook is downloading from, or use Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) which is the costliest option but gives you a separate corporate account on your Blackberry.
Note that some of the above options may require your company to be using Microsoft Exchange for email.

thanks Roger, I am with T-Mobile and they do provide an email account but its hardly nice to use or try and give out on the telephone.... ! I dont actually think it is a true push email system either the tech support people describled it as another hotmail type system that pushes every few mins.

Actually my name isn't Rogers; that's the name of my overpriced service provider.
I'm using BIS and my ugly rogers.blackberry.net address is not given out to anyone. They email my Yahoo account and it gets autoforwarded to my Blackberry account. My Blackberry account is set up to send emails as if From my Yahoo account.
I also have work emails auto-forwarded to my blackberry account. While I can change the Reply To address through a program called PocketDay, emails still present themselves as from Yahoo.
You are lucky, T-Mobiles's version of BIS allows you to have diffferent From addresses for different accounts. You have some hacking around to do in order to figure it all out but I am sure that you can make your system work pretty well.
My big piece of advice: don't give out your blackberry.net address. Have your Blackberry emulate one (or more) of your other addresses.
EDIT: To clarify, my tiny company isn't spending money on BES just yet.

There's a freebie one-user version of BES (BES express) available. Whether it'll work on your device will depend on a) which version of the handheld you have, and b) what APNs TMo UK have enabled for you.

Do you see an Enterprise Activation icon on your home screen, or entry in the options screen? If so, the handheld will work with BES (Many US folk don't realise that BBs come in BES and non-BES versions here in Europe. In the US most devices sold will work with a BES).
