Not any more. Seems for some reason no one can do it for 8700g's. What gives?
My company is forcing us to switch to Cingular from TMO.

had my 8700g unlocked by tmobile today. As long as you have had service for at least 6 months, and you tell them its for overseas use, they will do it free of charge. They emailed me the unlock code today and it worked great. Never even called them, sent a web customer support request, after that it took about 3 emails back and forth. Very pleased with their service.

I ask the same thing by calling T-Mobile customer services in UK but they charge you £15(~$30) for the service. They even advise you to better go to an unlock shop rather than using T-Mobile service.

Anyway, I will give a try by sending an email to customer service, maybe it works better.

Thanks for plugging another commercial unlocker. I believe pspiegel was asking for the URL to contact T-Mobile (which I don't have).

Actually, the requirement is only 3 months, at least in the U.S. I called T-Mobile and requested the unlock code after having the 8700g for 3 months. I got an e-mail with the unlock code the next day.

Thanks so much! Thats what I was looking for. After you unlock the unit, does it do anything to the connectivity at all? Or does it just only make it able to use foreign SIM cards.

It does not affect connectivity.

Thanks, is there a way that this could screw stuff up if i do it wrong/is it easy to do? I am going to be abroad often and I didn't even know this was an option so I am very intrigued..

Also, for the former techie in me, what exactly is happening technically when they do this? Is T-Mobile doing anything on their end, or is this purely a code to activate this capability on the blackberry itself? Do they randomly generate the code from the IMEI or is it a server/wireless tower kind of thing?

Correction... You only need to have your T-Mobile service for 3 months and you get the unlock code. You can call T-Mobile Customer Care directly at 800.937.8997 and request the unlock code as long as you've been a customer for 3 months and they'll provide the unlock code with instructions to your email address that you give in 24 hours. Customer Care will ask you for the IMEI from your phone to provide you the unlock code. To get the IMEI, press*#06# from the phone screen and the IMEI will pop up on your screen.

A lock code is randomly generated from the IMEI of each phone. This code doesn't affect the phone"s capability at all.

No free unlocker software.
Either done by the carrier or you pay for it.

I was able to get my 8700g unlocked from T-Mobile also. Just called them up, and in less than 24 hours, there is the unlock code.

Yes, if you have been a customer in good standing for several months, and you can only unlock one phone per line every 6 months (or something like that).

As long as you have a data plan associated with your SIM, all you should have to do to get things working is register your device:

Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table, then click on menu button and select register.

That should send your service books and any associated email accounts to your device.

If you haven't set up any email on T-Mobile yet, then you'll have to do that also.
