Exclamation Problem with EDGE and GPRS - 06-25-2006, 10:54 PM

Question One:

First of all, I love edge but since I moved more towards a rural area Edge does not work as well. GPRS however has full strength but does not become enabled unless EDGE has zero service. I would like to be able to switch from EDGE and GRPS manually or configure my Blackberry to have GPRS as default service and EDGE as backup.

Second Question:

Also since I moved I keep receiving email stating "do not delete, keep for server" and a new icon has been added to my homepage "enterprise activation". I click to activate and make up a user name and a password. It goes for a long time but does not activate. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you...

I'm going to take a guess with number 2 and ask if you are on a BES with your company. If not, then simply hide this icon by highlighting the icon, click the trackwheel and ALT key and choose "Hide Icon."

It seems that my blackberry switches from EDGE to GPRS. If Edge goes to zero then GPRS picks up. Where I live GPRS is high and edge is low, but edge is the default so eventhough GPRS has full service it will stay connected to EDGE with less then one bar.

Try registering the BlackBerry on the wireless network (Options > Host Routing Table > Register Now). Then hard reset it (remove battery). I don't know of any setting that will allow you to control GPRS/EDGE usage.

There are many different cingular options, does it matter which one I register with?

actually, the reason why you automatically switch from EDGE to GPRS means that the area you are in has no EDGE.now if you go into an EDGE provided area(or move to another location where EDGE is available) it automatically switches back from GPRS to EDGE.there is no control or settings for switching from EDGE to GPRS or vice versa, this is a network access thing.
and as jdjleo mentioned above,EDGE is a much faster form of connection for GPRS.

I upgraded to a 7130c and had to switch from ATT to Cingular. I was setting up the device and when it displayed GPRS, started Enterprise Avtivation/email started to work (yes, BES) but it started switching from EDGE to GPRS randomly and once it stayed on EDGEn EDGE it couldnt even finish activation. Called Cingular cust. service and the lady said there has been a problem with EDGE for a week now, and that no email would work????? Tech support said there is no option to manually switch, and that tier3 was working on the problem.

There are many areas within this site that talk to GPRS and EDGE and what they mean.

GPRS - General Packet Radio Service. A GSM data transmission technique that does not set up a continuous channel from a portable terminal for the transmission and reception of data, but transmits and receives data in packets. It makes very efficient use of available radio spectrum.

EDGE - Further enhancements to GSM networks are provided by Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology. EDGE provides up to three times the data capacity of GPRS. Using EDGE, operators can handle three times more subscribers than GPRS; triple their data rate per subscriber, or add extra capacity to their voice communications. EDGE uses the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200kHz carrier bandwidth as today's GSM networks, which allows it to be overlaid directly onto an existing GSM network. For many existing GSM/GPRS networks, EDGE is a simple software-upgrade.

What is the BB showing now? EDGE? GSM? gprs (lower case)?

What model BlackBerry do you have and what carrier? Are you subscribed to a BlackBerry Data Plan?

Maybe this is too picky, but since we are educating folks...
HSDPA - High Speed DOWNLINK Packet Access

Please don't be offended, I am just offering up the correct term.

While EDGE is required for data, it's still capable of carrying voice.

Well, not really...

I will say Edge = Slow DSL

It definitely is faster than dail up though.
