Exclamation Dead 8700c Beyond Hope? - 06-26-2006, 10:31 AM

Let me preface this with the fact that I Admin a BES for a local University, so I have a lot of experience with CellOne service (or lack of) and the 8700g, which I have, but have not yet seen a problem like this one.

The problem I'm having is with my wife's personal (BIS not BES) 8700g from Cingular.

Yesterday she said it started rebooting, the was giving jvm exception errors. I downloaded the latest Destop Manager, and latest Cingular OS for the device and attempted to load it. Got the dreaded Communication Error afte the "erasing" process (A:0x00000025) and the blank screen with flashing LED.

After several attempts trying anything I could find on this site, I eventually tried entering an incorrect password ten times (from the PC as I have no screen on the bb), and it said it was erasing all the application data.

This left the 8700 in a state of blank screen and solid LED, but now, no communication with the PC at all, at one point it tried to load the USB device but then errored out, and haven't had any communication since.

I've tried all the key combinations, removing the battery, etc.

I can hook my 8700g up and it's recognized with no prob, so I know it's not a USB issue on the PC or a Desktop Software issue.

My guess is that it's a hardware issue with the 8700c. The EPROM is probably shot. The bad news (which was originally good news) is that because the Cingular salesperson said the BB wasn't in their inventory system they gave it to her for free, the bad news is that this leaves us with no reciept for the bb and as far as their system is concerned, I'm guessing it would be non-existant.

Anything I'm missing here? Even tried to load the apploader from command line without the JVM, but it's dead as a doornail.

Thanks.

Have you tried javaloader -usb wipe
and then tried reloading the OS?

I think I had a similar problem before and went through all the steps you tried. I wound up taking the cord out of the front USB port on my DELL and hooking it to the rear USB and this allowed for communication.

I know it's a WAG - but I figure that I would mention it. I've also had this happen once when I was trying to upload/modify a Moto Razr. It wouldn't allow me to access it from the front USB.

yep, tried the javaloader, which gives me "unable to connect to port", and also tried various USB ports on various computers.... I think it's Dead Jim.

Is the unit under any warranty still? I know it sounds silly but worth a try with the vendor.

Default Cingular has fantastic Customer Service. - 06-28-2006, 02:16 PM

Even with the "no reciept" Cingular replaced the unit with a brand new one and even gave us a reciept for this one! for Cingular, wish CellOne would take this as a lesson!

Nice to hear a "happy ending" for a change.
