The 8700g is T mobile's version. He could buy an unlocked g and use it on Cingular. Inside they are the same. The differences are cosmetic.

I have a 8700c with cingular and IM messages(if not used by your browser) count as txt messages which is noted included in my data plan. You have to purchase a txt message plan. Point is it adds up. If T-Moblie data plans include txt messages that may be the way to go.

Just a thought.....

You can download various IM programs that use data instead of text to transmit. Search the forums here, I have seen many threads or PM me and I can send you a link. I can't post links yet due to having <10 posts :(

Do you mean, http://www.pdaapps.com/bbyApps.html (great trial time)
or
http://www.shapeservices.com/en/prod...php?product=im (trial is short)

They have a great trial ver. Once thing I heard you can do is send IM's to peoples phones who do not have IM. like from there using Yahoo IM sending to joe smith 212-555-1212. Not sure if this is true. Anyone have a clue?

If you send from Yahoo to a user's phone, its going via SMS and you will be charged for a normal SMS message. I just saw an actualy Yahoo branded client on the blackberry(dot)com website free for download as well. There are many clients out there. I know someone in Isreal right now that I communicate with via IM on his Blackberry. VERY efficient and quick.

So you send via a IM client service as I listed and it goes to a phone number?

What are they?
