New 8700 user... "instant" mails have me confused -

Ok... I'm new to the BlackBerry platform and I must say it's a little confusing after being used to Palm and WM. I LOVE my 8700 so far though.
Here's my question. My office uses Exchange, but I'm not sure if we have BES. I got the BB last weekend and have been away at trial since Monday, so I haven't gotten to talk to our IT guys.
I created my BIS account, it created a mycingular.blackberry email for me and I also added my gmail. Each of those shows up as an icon on my BB. I then added my work email (Exchange-based) using the BIS interface. It recognizes that it is an Exchange account, and adds an icon to my BB.
I emailed the IT guy who handles our firm's blackberries, and told him my BB email address (blah@mycingular.blackberry). Now, I receive my work email on that address, and I also get it on the work account I created through BIS... so I'm getting duplicate emails.
However, the BB address gets the messages almost instantly, while the other one takes a while, even though it says it's an Exchange account and not POP3.
My questions:
- Did I give my IT guy the wrong info?
- I know I can delete the BIS-created work account to eliminate the duplicate email problem, but if I do, how do I send email from that work address from the device?
I looked at my boss' 8700 and the only mail icon he has is the Messages icon. No icons are hidden, either. All his emails arrive instantly in the Messages folder, and he sends email from his work account which is the default. He didn't configure the device, the IT guy did, and I can't get ahold of him and can't spend much time during the day dealing with it. I want to figure this out because it's bugging me.
Where did I go wrong? Help is much appreciated. Sorry for the length of this post.
