It's a long story but my 8700c was in the same pocket with an egg that broke. Following this clear well-illustrated guide, I was able to clean out all the residue - everything works and the funky smell is gone. Many thanks!

This red sticker seems very common in the 8700g. All my friends have the 'red patch'. My one friend who has a cingular 8700c is the only one without the red. It's funny i used my 7100t in all the same situation and the patch is still white. In fact I'm currently using it and it's still good. I think it's a defect in the 8700g or poor placement of the patch as I never got my 8700g wet. My friends haven't either. I think it's a defect or a conspiracy by tmobile to void our warranties.
I now want to take my 8700g apart to clean up. However, when I click on the link in the first post, none of the images display. Any chance anyone has the instructions with the photos in a separate document that would mind sharing?
