It's a long story but my 8700c was in the same pocket with an egg that broke. Following this clear well-illustrated guide, I was able to clean out all the residue - everything works and the funky smell is gone. Many thanks!

I think it's a defect in the 8700g or poor placement of the patch as I never got my 8700g wet. My friends haven't either. I think it's a defect or a conspiracy by tmobile to void our warranties.
I have AT&T service and mine is red too.

I now want to take my 8700g apart to clean up. However, when I click on the link in the first post, none of the images display. Any chance anyone has the instructions with the photos in a separate document that would mind sharing?

Thanks in advance.

Since I have to post 10 times to see pictures might as well get started. Just need to buy a replace window lens (not screen). Do I have to take case off to do this?

Just do a search with "Blackberry disassembly" and you'll get some help...I don't think I can post a link yet, just a N00B

Can this thread be updated so instead of referring to a link with no pictures can it be replaced with this video: -

Where is the antenna located on the 8700g?
I am wanting to use the Blackberry induction antenna. Any thoughts?

The antennas are usually a tape type antenna and are located in the bottom of the device below the keypads.
