I just upgraded the BB Desktop Manager on my desktop PC to version 4.2. I tried using the Media Manager but it gave me an error saying that

"The connected BlackBerry device does not support transferring media files. Verify that the device has BlackBerry Device Software version 4.2 or later installed".

It doesn't. It has version 4.1. I can't figure out how I can upgrade the "Device Software" to version 4.2. Any pointers? I have the 8700c.

Simple. 4.2 isn't available for the 8700 yet. It's not available for any BB other than the Pearl.
