I would suggest the 8700 now.
Especially since it will be awhile before we even know that the final configuration is for the 8800, what pricing is like, what carriers get it first etc.
The 8700 is a very nice model. You may find that even after the 8800 comes out, that you may prefer the 8700. If that's the case then your far better off getting it now and enjoying it.
If that is not the case, as least you will have had the 8700 experience so that you will know what's important to you on a modern full qwerty BlackBerry. Therefore you will be better prepared to decide which of the new upcoming models suite you best.
Finally, Based on what I've heard here on the forum, there are two 8800 models. One with a camera and one without. However further research indicates that not only will that be the case, but the actual sizes and form factors are different as well.
So far it appears that the Indigo 8800 will be the first one released and without a camera. This model is wider and appears to have a larger keyboard than the 2nd model known as Crimson 8800. The Crimson will have a camera and some other features unique to that model, however it's narrower and therefore the keyboard will be more cramped.
It's these differences that will make quite a difference in how the two feel and operate. So by getting the 8700 now you will have a base of experience from which to use as a helpful guide to your wants and needs in the upcoming models.
Cheers......
