Without a data plan you will receive the data connection refused message that's normal. You should be able to make calls as well as send and receive text messages. Are you receiving an error message when trying to make a call? If so what is it?

hi there

thanks for your reply. i dont get any errors. but when i use another phone to try to call in to my bb, it says i am unavailable. like the bb was off or sth. i managed to work ard the problem by manually seraching for my network. but is there any way to make sure it doesnt switch back to the previous settings?

Most of the time if you leave it on manual it will stick with that network. Occasionally it doesn't always stick, though.
