Hey everyone, I followed the instructions that Mark put up here on how to setup your laptop to use the 8700C as a modem. It worked great! The only question I had was is Cingular going to charge me extra if I use the 8700C this way? I have the orange sim with an unlimited data plan. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on what my bill is going to look like if I continue to use the Blackberry this way.

did you ever get this to work for you? I am getting error 736: the remote computer terminated the protocol. I have the unlimited data plan but not the "tethering" option on my account. I was told by a colleague (who connects without paying for the tethering option using his perl) you do not need to pay the extra fee.

the tethering plan exists for a reason, your data usage will jump substantially while tethering, you are most likely surfing since connecting to check you e-mail while using a blackberry for the connection would be down right absurd. It's the same reason verizon frowns upon using phones like the Q with slingbox, if you want that much bandwith then they will hammer your pocket, just my $.02....
Sidenote, cingular does not support DUN, to answer your wireless questions, though when I had a 8700c in the begining i had this working at dialup speeds, but soon after that was no longer an option...

i am not sure how much of your statements are correct.

With Cingular, with the unlimited BLackberry Connect plan, if you set ut up correctly (as per Marks instructions) you shouldn't be charged any extra.

I do the same with T-Mo now (I did it with CIngular for several months) and have never been charged ANYTHING extra.

not sure what you mean by "unlimited blackberry connect plan" are you impyling using blackberry connect on a non-blackberry, i.e. treo650?? if so thats a completely different issue, using a cingular 8700c for bluetooth DUN is A: not possible as of yet and tethering your bb via usb usually ends up getting you data overages, while workarounds do exist, I have seen many get hit with data overages....

Cingular officially requires the addition of the tethering data plan. TMO doesn't. That's a major difference between the two carriers. Yes, it is possible to get tethering to work without the tethering plan on Cingular but Cingular is known for charging for usage (they will back-charge for however long you've been tethering) without being sympathetic about it if you play dumb. Feel free to give it a try but just be aware of the risks.

You didn't say BT DUN originally, you said "Sidenote, cingular does not support DUN" and that is clearly incorrect.

And tethering doesn't "USUALLY" end up with data charges. Like I said, I tethered with both CIngular and T-Mo and never had any additional charges.
