Default HSDPA/UMTS enables 870x series Blackberries in the US - 01-16-2007, 10:43 AM

If I could buy one of theose asian market only 8700 series that have 3G could I use it in the US? Or since the US 3G network opperates at a different frequency will it not give me 3G?

Correct. It wouldn't work here in the US because of the different frequencies....

Dang! that blows, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we have a whole 3G network, it would be great to get that sort of service.

I'm really hoping that the 8800 has 3G it's going to be my requirment for my next phone. I would have gotten the iPhone when it comes out, but it supposedly only has edge. So far it looks like I'm either going to get the HTC Hermes (Cingular 8525) or the 8800 if it has 3G.

I know 3G hasn't propigated in many other parts of Amaerica, but since I can have access in the area I live in, that means I should have access.

That and browsing on my Blackberry has gotten slow compared to my Cable Modem. 3G has up to 1.5Mbps download, pair that with a 400MHz or faster CPU and browsing the web is a flash!!

I though San Fran (proper) was fully WiFi. Not true, or is it still being built?

As far as I know, the 8800 doesn't look like it'll have 3G. Now the 9xxx series that BBCool and BG mention in this article looks like it'll be your huckleberry.... Thats the one I'll be waiting for too....

I'm afraid you're going to be waiting a bit if you're intending your next device to be a US 3G Blackberry...

Nope, lets see, Cupertino, Mountain View, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Concord.

As far as I know San Francisco hasn't squared away their Wi-Fi service yet.

Then again I hardly go to San Francisco, I Live in Newark (east south-east bay near Fremont) and I commute to Sunnyvale where I run a website. And the location in Sunnyvale that I work at, near the Yahoo Complex, the service in Sunnyvale is nada, and I can't pick up the Mountain View connection either.

Anyways what's Wi-Fi got to do with the speed of my data connection over the Cellular network? there are far less cities with Wi-Fi than there are cities with 3G in the Bay Area. Additionally, I use the data connection on my blackberry when I'm away from home and work, so the wireless connections at either locale wouldn't help either.

Looks like I'm going to go with the Cingular 8525, I've been away from PocketPC for so long, I don't really want to leave the Blackberry but It looks like RIM's inability to maintain a lead on technology has me driven away from them.

The death of a fanboy...

You can get such phones as the Cingular 8525 that is 3G and can run Blackberry connect.

Just offering an alternative which is/will always be faster than 3G. In other words, if your need for connectivity was in a geography which was wired city/county-wide for WiFi, your perceived need for 3G cellular data speeds wouldn't be an issue. It was only a thought.

I don't think 3G is all that it is cracked up to be. I have a Blackjack and can barely tell the difference between 3G and EDGE, other than the battery drain in 3G.

Yeah but I wasn't aware that anywhere in New Hampshire had 3G! Also the Blackjak has a 200MHz CPU running a clumsy Windows OS, I doubt that even if you had wiFi on the blackjack, (which I dont think it has) it would still not perform very fast beacuse of the processing limitations.

But with a 400MHz or faster CPU and 1.5Mbps download rate the 8525, or a 3G enable blackberry would be great!
