i can easily crash my 8700g running this 4.2 release by listening to some ringtones. After 3 of 4 tries the blackberry crashes with a java error. Could reproduce this in 3 different 8700g devices.

I have noticed that Dimension Zen has the quickest response time.

Interesting. I've seen probably 10+ devices on BES, BIS, no 3rd party apps, lots of 3rd party apps and no lag.

The only lag I've noticed is in Messenger when my conversation histories get really long. Clear the history and every thing's back to normal.

I got it running - the new AT&T theme is cool.

BTW did anyone notice that it now has the option to turn off data services in the mobile network section under settings? No more hacking the GPRS files.

I need to change my signature now!

got it installed, no problems - during install.
It looks good, nice new features, but it really slows the poor device down.
And my KlickTel (German phone number search plus inverse) does not work anymore.

Another "enhancement" (depending on the eye of the beholder) is that you have the ability to set your BES messages to have a different background than your other messages or vice-versa; see enclosed screenshots.

exclusion of address book from content protection indicates that you will be able to see who is calling.

Maybe I am missing something here, but can you not organize applications in the zen theme anymore? This will really suck if thats the case.

You have to do it like you do in icon. Go to application list, hold alt and click.

Since 4.2 has the T-mo MyFaves built in, do I need to modify the ALX files to get it working? I know I need to tell them I'm on a pearl to get them to add it to my account though.

Question Problem installing 4.2x - help. - 04-12-2007, 03:59 PM

Hi:

Have been waiting for this for quite some time, and now I am unable to install. I have an 8700C and it has the latest 4.1x software on it now. Downloaded the 4.2x software, ran the installer and it put the 4.2 DM on my system. I then hooked up my BB and ran the app loader. In the past, I thought this was the way to have it recognize that I have na older OS on my BB and then it would offer to update. But, it is not doing that. It see thr 4.1x and basically just gives me the usual options to delete various apps. No where does it show me 4.2x. I do have a corporate policy on my BB, but it has never before restricted me from upgrading using a non-corporate download. I assume they could have added that to the policy, but I have no way to know for sure.

Any ideas?

Delete the vendor.xml. You have to delete it each time you install a new OS.

Hi...Thanks for the quick response. I had neglected to mention in my first post that I had already tried that by renaming it to something with another extension. Just tried again and had completely deleted the file.

Any other thoughts? I could try to use the jl comdr app to wipe the BB first. I have used that app before.

Thanks.

Just for those interested.

You can receive new ringtones using Bluetooth now using OS4.2
Go to Media and then select ringtones and select "Receive Using Bluetooth"
Then select the ringtone on your PC and right click and click send to Bluetooth device. It will search for your Blackberry. Just hit ok and then it will start to send. Pretty cool feature!

I just finished my upgrade. I know someone earlier said they bricked their BB doing this install.

I want to point out that mine seemed to freeze as well after installing the OS and during the initialization phase. It just sat there with an hourglass. I almost cried thinking I may have killed it and I might have to be without a BB until the 8300 is out.

But after about 10 minutes, it finished initializing. DO NOT GIVE UP. Let it run for a while. I actually disconnected it and pushed some buttons, but decided NOT TO PULL THE BATTERY. Then I plugged it back in and after a few more mins it was done. Phew! It might be because I have a lot of aftermarket software on it.

I also have the crashing problem when listening to ringtones. Some error message involving java comes up.

I also noticed it turns off the backlight immediately after locking the keys now, whereas before it would remain on or a little while. I like it turning off right away.

EDIT to add a couple of things:

1) I can't use Vodafone theme anymore, it's all screwed up. It might have been because it was active when I did the update. I recommend you activate one of the other themes before doing the update. My pakage only seems to have installed the Dimension Zen and Today themes. The Wave-Icon theme shows up on the list but isn't able to be activated.

2) I can't unlock the keypad with the trackwheel anymore. When it says "Handheld is locked" and I highlight and select "Unlock," it will revert to the screen that says to push * then TALK. It doesn't unlock by pushing the trackwheel like it used to.

Ring tones. Makes it a whole lot easier.

I also noticed that no one has mentioned the ability to change the password attempts anywhere from ten to three. The volume and quality of sound has improved as well.

I think this was an issue when the 8800 first came out. This is very annoying to me and hopefully there is a way to change this option.

Just downloaded also. Very nice feature upgrade. I did notice the ringtone freeze issue, not sure how to correct this. Overall the new stuff makes me not worry too much about loading ringtones. I like the separate mailbox for sms/mms and the red font for pin and bb messenger messages. I say give it a try. No lag on apps or browsing. If you don't like it you can always go back to 4.1, but I'm staying with 4.2. Good Luck.

It's a shame, the themes in the 8800 release won't work with the 8700. I was hoping to get the orange theme...

Bear with me, old BB user but only ever upgraded with official Cingular versions. Now at 4.1 and if I read the thread correctly I can install this version but at some point I need to delete the vendor.xml file.

Care to confirm or assist with the correct process?
