Got a glitch here. My battery meter has 3 of 4 bars but under settings it shows as 95 % and after a hard reset it shows as 90% but still with 3 bars. :/ not good.

Browse to ringtones in the media manager, Preloaded ringtones. Click, view Thimbnails. I get a hourglass permanently displayed.
Also an uncaught exception:java.lang.ClassCastException if I try and play Alarm_Antelope.mid...
Anyone else able to reproduce this?

I would be ecstatic about this... except I already upgraded to the 8800 the day before this thread was started... oh well.

I had an iT Policy rejected when Enterprise Activating after doing the full backup/install/restore. That made the installation a little rougher, but I wiped the device and am back up and running. Most time spent rchoosing a theme and then reorganizing icons on the theme since my old thing BB Insight-Icon no longer there.
All in all, I guess I'm disappointed. I don't think (checked several threads and attempted several times) video is supported (at least via multiPlay or built in media player) like the 8100 and 8800. But I do like the voice notes, although again, I installed multiPlay so i can save them (can't save them with built-in recorder) and then attach them to regular emails, not just MMSs. I can send them from my Yahoo account, but not my corporate email (must be a BES limitation). Also the new Desktop manager in combo with multiPlay File Manage gives you a little more control over the files and file structure. But, only 11MB free for files...not quite sure when not much is used...looks like 12 total. Attaching in emails OK, but again, only functional files are ringtones, pictures and voice note WAV files. It would be a lot more functional if you could manage and manipulate MS Office files!! I supposed you could transfer them and then attach them to an email (but couldn't directly open them).
I'm still wanting WiFi, GPS, and a camera, so the wait continues for the 8300 on TMo!!

04-14-2007, 10:33 AM
I have seen several posts on this thread reference voice notes however I have yet to find this functionality on my 8700c.

Is there a way to send voice note through email? It's much cheaper for me.

Lol, ironically after all that - im going to uninstall it, and but 4.1 back on.
I like it, but switching applications is way to slow on the 8700g. At one point it took almost 3 minutes to open the media application.

First when I installed the new OS, it was really slow also. But after a day, now it's running fine.

Really? Well I did notice it was a little faster today, but not fast enough.
When it's officially released from Rogers, will it be faster? Or is it always going to be like that?

Initially Slow but eventually gets faster. -

Hey guys,
I had the same issues after initial installation Everything was super slow. Slow to open to the point of hanging. A couple of battery pulls and opening every app on the device and before I knew it I was up to speed if not faster than on 4.1.
I did notice that Google Maps would initially open but upon the second opening would hang the device. I reinstalled and it works like a charm now.
On the whole a pleasant upgrade. No real surprises. Some nice cool features. Nice to finally have the stuff my wifes Pearl has always had....
This makes my decision to not upgrade to the 8800 (because of the overall 'suck-factor') a little more palatable.
Cheers!
R.

Yes, I'm on 8700g with the new 4.2 and on the Bell theme anyhow, I have an icon for "Send Voice Note". You can't save it, but you can "MMS" it. So I MMS it to myself on my BIS account and then I can forward from my Yahoo account to anyone.
But, I installed Multiplay (which has a media player, file manager, voice not recorder and a text not application) and that voice recorder can save the recording with different formats (WAV, AMR, G711 Ulaw?, G711 Alaw? ) and oyu can pick a directory to save it to. Then you can compose an email and use the new "attach file" function and navigate to the folder and attach the file. Some BESs though might not support, so that's why I have to send from my Yahoo BIS or my Tmo BIS accounts. Hope that helps!

One thing that is broken though is the Tmo messenger app that had connections for AOL, MSN, Yahoo IM. I get the error "Blackberry_8700_4$2e1$2e10_i_TMO_4IM: Symbol 'UiApplication.pushModalGlobalScreen' not found."
Not like i can call Tmo tech support on this upgrade!! Anyone have any ideas? Any Tmo users able to reinstall the IM app? This is not the Blackberry messenger, this is the TMO IM app.

I am doing something wrong here so I got to go back to basics. I successfully installed the 4.2 OS that was provuded on page 1 of this thread. After the install I was dissappointed to find only 4 themes. I read the above that provides the downloads on how to make available all of the themes for 4.2 OS. But it does not tell how to do it for newbie nerds like me. If the 4.2 OS is already on my device do I only try to download and install the ALX download or do I have to install tyhe OS he lists in the quote above first.
Take it that I know nothing. How do I get the above quoted ALX onto my device to open up all of the themes. Can someone walk me through this as I am totally confused at this point. Again, I am prepared to remove the 4.2 OS on their presently and install the one he has in his quote. I just don't understand how to register on my device this new ALX download string that he references above
Please help because I really need these other themes

I'm having the same problem with a T-Mo 8700g. I rebooted before and after each of these steps:
I first downloaded the OS and installed it right away and synced, no dice.
I then deleted the vendor.xml file and synced.. nothing, the vendor file just reappeared.
I then deleted the vendor.xml file and reinstalled the OS, then synced, nothing. Vendor.xml file was back.
Any other combination I should try? Do I need to uninstall my desktop manager and reinstall?
Update: Got it. The final combo I had previously missed worked; I installed the OS, deleted the vendor.xml file, and synced. Installing now....

Hi Ramsy,
It is what I concern about it. Currently, I have CSL 4.1.x on my 8700. I believe I might need to wait for CSL 4.2.x to be available.
Do you like 4.2 on your 8700? I am with tmo too.

Thanks to everyone who provided instructions. I was able to set it up without a hitch. Here are the steps I took, as a complete newbie to the OS updating game (my 8700g was hitherto using the original TMo software v4.1.0.284):
* Download and install the software on your computer. I did not have to install a new version of the desktop manager. The one I have (4.1.1.9) was enough.
* Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete (or preferably move away) the vendor.xml
* Connect your device to the computer with the USB cable. The App Loader will report that there are several components to be installed. You can choose to not install some, like language support you don't need. There were only some European languages I removed. Several useful ones like Japanese, Chinese, Hindi etc weren't listed.
* Once the software selection (which lists what is already installed as well) is done, the next is the backup, reinstall and restore process. This is fully automated. It backs up your whole device, wipes it, reinstalls 4.2 and restores all your data. The 'reinitializing device' step is slow, but please have patience. It took me about 15 mins.
* Everything is done and the new theme is visible when the screen comes to life.
I have so far not noticed any issue with originally installed software or data. Everything seems fine, and it looks great. Thanks.

I installed this yesterday, i found that i had some programs that i needed to delete and re-install, but nothing to severe.
One curious glitch that was easy to reset, the apn had changed and was screwing up some programs from working properly.
Also if like me you are in love with todomatrix and ideamatrix it will work, but you lose the full menu function. I emailed rexwireless and as ever the response was fast this issue should be sorted soon.
I found that some apps like the media centre took an age to open the first time, but after that i have noticed an increase in the speed of the O/S compared to 4.1.
Hope this of some help.
Forget to add i have also changed the desktop manager to 2.2.1 and i can now use the full media facilities for transfering pictures.

I was able to get this installed no problem and am impressed with the speed and extra features.
How is the battery life been? I'm a little weary with the upgrade as I've only had my phone sitting next to me for the last hour and it has dropped down to 85% battery life. I'm not sure if it drained a bunch due to the processor going through BES activation or if this is just a battery hog. Any comments?

I'm suspicious battery life is reduced. But remember there's also an issue of (maybe) a briken battery meter confusing things. I will see how it goes next week...

If you have already installed OS 4.2 and want the additional themes in B3n_Asian_Freak's .alx file ( which you can get here), follow these instructions:
(1) Extract BlackBerry.alx to installation path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8700-v4.2.1.66_P2.3.0.59
(2) Open Desktop Manager. It should prompt you to update the Core Applications.
