It get's weirder...

De-install the 4.2 BB s/w (I've now done this a few times), re-install, remove the vendor file. Open DM - look at About DM, Device Software - many times this was just blank/empty/no record. This time, it does have an entry - Device Model - V4.2.1.66 (Platform 2.3.0.59) -*BUT* that is *NOT* the version installed on the BB (it is 4.1.0.355). Yes, communication is fine with the BB.

If I go to App Loader, this all goes fine now (no error) - since I'm now not forcing the update to V4.2 (as above, by navigating to the location in common files where the new 4.2 BB files are living).

So, basically, I think I am stuck (like others in this thread) where I just can't get 4.2 BB device software onto the BB...

Any hints?

I have upgraded and downgraded my 8700 from 4.1 to 4.2 and vice versa several times. (including an early beta of 4.2)
It worked with no major problems, except that some folders in the media section remain when you go back to 4.1 which the 4.1 OS can't handle.

Did you wipe you handheld before installing the new OS?
(using javaloader and the wipe command)

Did you attempt to restore your old settings from 4.1?
Maybe better try a clean install.

Did you delete you vendor xml and did an install with all preselected options?

No - didn't wipe - but think I will do so now.

Yes - deleted vendor xml prior to running DM.

Default Reproduce: uncaught exception:java.lang.ClassCastException - 04-16-2007, 08:01 AM

We were able to reproduce this error on every BlackBerry we upgraded to 4.2 software.

I'm being lazy now - but, can you direct me on how to wipe the BB?

I went to App Loader, Advanced, Erase all App data (couldn't erase all apps as it was greyed out). That didn't do it (but it did remove then add the apps back in).

Or are you talking about a separate application other than DM to do the wipe?

Default 4.2 Working Well on TMO 8700g - 04-16-2007, 12:19 PM

Loaded 4.2--with the key being deleting the vendor.xml file. Using the Vodafone today theme and it is faster then any of my themes under 4.1. Haven't tried any other themes. All my data transfered back to my 8700 no problem, all email addresses registered and all data was intact after the update. I just let it run. took about 30 or so minutes total to load.

Usually they bundle every available theme into the package. As far as I know there is no CDMA release yet

I've got 4.2 up and running. Seems to be fine but missing a few things from 4.1 and what others appear to have:

1. Cannot open attachments in email. There is no "open attachment" option.
2. Where/how are you guys taking/sending voice notes?
3. No "reconcile now" option in email

Thoughts?

I am questioning the same information as you are regarding voice notes. I placed another post on page 7 inquiring further:

There's an icon on the home screen for sending voice notes. Make sure it's not hidden

First place I checked was for whether it was hidden or not. I do have an icon for Push to Talk (w/Cingular) but have not seen one for Voice Notes.

Thumbs up My experience... - 04-16-2007, 03:42 PM

Downloaded new Desktop Mgr 4.2 (SP1) and the HH software.
Installed both, removed Vendor.XML and used the revised BlackBerry.alx as provided by an earlier poster.

Started the Application update at 2:52 EDT today (specified that I wanted to backup and restore application data, but not messages).

It took about 30 minutes, but everything seemed to work just fine. My install doesn't seem to have loads of themes though, which is fine with me I have Voda/Today and Zen, which is sufficient.

1. I can open things just fine, there's an "Open Attachment" option just as there was with 4.1.

2. I have an icon on the home screen for voice notes, however I haven't actually tried using it. But, it's there. I also have a voice note option in BBMessenger (along with send file).

3. This is not missing on mine.

I'm running it on a T-Mobile 8700g. No idea what your issues could be, are you on a BIS or BES?

Interesting, on my BBMessenger I do have the ability to record a voice note (works like a charm) however there is not an app on the home ribbon. MMMhhhhhh? Not a huge feature I would use but . . . .

Does anyone know if this new OS upgrade will allow for the use of Bluetooth to talk with a GPS unit using GPRS?

I know the Pearl and 8800 work for this so I assume it would.

Under advanced options, there is an option for GPS. This option allows you to pair the 8700 running this OS with a bluetooth GPS.

Maybe it's a theme thing? I'm using the Bell Icon theme and have an icon for "Send Voice Note".

Thanks to Jimi for the easy Download!!

There were some applications during the App Loader process that were not checked off, should I add these? Some were obvious "NO"s like the language files but how about Blackberry Maps and the others? Should I click to add all the apps and what are the ones that are not checked off?

Any info? I have moved ahead with the install without adding these because I figured I could just add them later.

Oh man, I gotta get this OS upgrade! This will save me a ton of time. I travel all around the Atlanta area and as those that live in and around Atlanta know, the traffice is brutal.

I just have to wait until Cingular comes out with the upgrade because even though I bought by 8700c and pay my monthly bill, my company will not support there other upgrade (I use their BES). They tell me I need to wait until Cingular comes out with the upgrade.

Just an FYI. As a practical matter, the OS upgrade is invisible to your BES. Your BES administrator will not even know you are running a newer OS unless he clicks on your profile in the BES control panel and then goes and looks up what OS your handheld is running. When your handheld syncs with the BES, this info, along with everything else about your handheld (i.e. battery life left) is transmitted to the BES. If your BES administrator is running the default policy on your BES (or a similar type policy), the BES will not care what OS you are running. And on the off chance that your BES does care, as many people in this thread have pointed out, they have been able to upgrade to 4.2 and downgrade to 4.1 without problems.

Thanks for the info Ramsy.

I do not know if my upgrade to 4.2 will create an issue or not. He told me they like to keep everyone on the same version but I have no idea why. The whole thing is frusterating for sure because I know how much the upgrade will help me and I paid for my 8700 and pay the monthly bill. For them to tell me not to upgrade is very frusterating.

I have never done an OS upgrade so I guess that is why I am a bit timid about it. I don't want to screw anything up on my end or their end. On the other hand, I am a bit computer savy so I can probably do it with detailed instructions. I don't have DM installed either, they have always done the upgrades (one of them) remotely while I am connected to their server.

I would probably go with your gut instinct and not upgrade then. My FYI was more of just general info. Your BES could have very restrictive policies which might make upgrading a hassle to unimpossible - and it always is bad to find out the hard way. Also, as you described, your BES pushes out any updates wirelessly vs. users getting them themselves online from your wireless carrier, so they are definitely concerned about the OS and compatability of the handheld's OS and the BES server.

Has anyone else noticed that once installing 4.2 on your 8700, the volume of ring tones significantly decreases. I wear mine in the leather official 8700 case and once installing the new OS, i had to change the volume from low to high in some cases just to hear when i was getting a new message. Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks again, you are probably right. Being that they like to control all the upgrades and so forth, it must have something to do with the compatability with their BES server....although I don't know that for sure.

I can only hope that cingular comes out with the upgrade soon.

Default 4.2 Experience and AT&T Theme for 8700c - 04-16-2007, 09:20 PM

I upgraded to 4.2 on my Cingular 8700c but have since downgraded to 4.1. My main issues were:

1. I couldn't get long messages to search for remaining text on some messages. It kept saying "service book not located". Other long messages were fine.
2. Attachments would not work
3. I couldn't get the calendar to wirelessly sync. I think I corrupted the Lotus Notes database somehow so even downgrading has not fixed this issue and the helpdesk at work is totally out of their league with anything above a password reset!

I loved the AT&T theme though. Is there any way to load the theme onto a 4.1 8700c. I have enabled all the themes on the device by modifying the alx file but it doesn't include the AT&T one. The other carriers appear to be colour-blinf I found out though. Some awful themes out there!

Viewing the message bit by bit seemed to solve the issue but I really need the blackberry for work and didn't want to mess around with that.

I do really need a fix to the wireless calendar sync if anyone has one. I've tried all desktop versions, replacing the database, checking database consistency etc. Nothing works!

Yes, I noticed this and the 'escalating' volume is also not as dramatic. I almost missed a meeting today and had to switch calendar notifications to an inherently louder one 'notifier_eager' I think I switched to. I'm assuming we can't control the volume somehow.
